Any Cryogenic Haulers?

That's very good advice. I wish someone had told me that back when I started driving.

 

I hauled cryo for Praxair for 5 years or so. I worked for a sub, but pay and trucks were equivalent to Prax corporate. Good money, good equipment, and recession proof, but if you want any kind of a life you need to look elsewhere. Plants run 24/7/365, and it is a combination of customer demand and plant output that determines your time off. Safety and process are gospel, and they are anal about it. It is easy to work with as long as you do what you are supposed to and follow procedure. Elogs, OBCs, roll avoidance and rapid deceleration monitoring, and speed monitoring are all part of the program, too. Pay is a combo of mileage, drop pay, detention, and hourly. We drove nothing but day cabs in order to haul more product, and we did longer trips. Motels and meal per diem were included, so overall it was a good gig.
Average pay was in the low to mid 60's, and I saw 70 before I left. This job is a great one if you can stand the odd hours and inconsistent home time. I needed more stability in those areas than I could get, but I do miss running cryo. I now have a M-F days job that pays close to what I was making, and I am happy. Cryo is a great long term job if you are willing and able to live with the instability.

 

Hey, I worked for Matlack out of Sarnia, Ontario (244) from '96 to '98. Not every day was Twinkies and Yoo-Hoo, but overall the "Pipeline on Wheels" treated me okay. I was sad to see them go.

Worked for BOC Gases for a short time and agree with wis bang and chalupa. Also wear head gear, at least your ball cap. In the unlikely but certainly possible event that you brush your receding hairline against a product pipe in the pump compartment, you'll be glad you did. Take your time, double check your valves, and don't deviate from company load/unload procedures and you'll do fine.
