I know three day cab drivers that are owner operators. Two of them haul dual and do deliveries to gas stations, the other hauls food grade tanks.

There is plenty of work if you look for it.

It definitely requires planning ahead and not waiting too late in the day to reserve a hotel. I also generally shut down by 5 or 6 and start early so this helps with getting in before the truck spots fill up. Technology makes it much easier to find a hotel that will fit a carhauler. At 85ft long it can be challenging at times, but you can't park a loaded car carrier in the majority of spots in truck stops so I feel like hotels are a better option. I have stayed in sleepers in the past, but most of my years have been in hotels. I don't ever have appointments and don't wait to load or unload. If you were being delayed at shippers and receivers a day cab might not work for OTR. I also generally don't run hot but when I need to I can still run close to my 11 since hotels are usually spread out all over. I have a network of other carhaulers to ask where they stay if I am in a unfamiliar part of the country which really helps.
