kllm regionals and some dedicated accts have the minimum guarantees; trucks are freightliner, kw, and a few peters.

I talked to a driver that had been with Marten about 11 years. He said he's not going anywhere until he retires.

You’ve only been driving 3mos and you’re basing a future career decision on that short of time? You don’t have near enough time in trucking or with your current employer to make a solid decision. You’re going to have to do a year with them or you’ll be setting yourself up for employment problems, down the road. Just relax.

I started hauling car parts, about the same time you started driving. I’ve been in this industry, since ‘90. I’ve had some rough patches with this segment of trucking and with my employer. However, things have smoothed out. I questioned what I was doing a few times, but, wasn’t about to quit. I went to the mgmt and ownership for a couple pep talks. Not only did that result in immediate operational changes, but, helped my morale and long-term outlook with them. Trucking isn’t perfect and takes time to iron itself out. Then, you have to be astute enough to look at the overall picture; not at specific events.

I think, you’re placing too much emphasis on the guaranteed pay. You’re passing on a LOT of other opportunities. I once worked for a company who offered it. I quickly realized they needed the guaranteed pay to keep drivers, because the company sucked. And, if you’re working for a company who have you sitting, you’re sitting because they suck. Their guaranteed pay shouldn’t be the reason to drive for them. Their minimum will end up being what you earn, most weeks. Don’t set yourself up for that situation. There are too many other opportunities to work for better companies, where you can earn more money.

IIRC, Marten has a drop lot in Rochelle, IL. It’s a bit of a drive to use their drop lot as a home base, if my memory is correct. I definitely considered driving for them.

Dot Foods is your best reefer opportunity. I drove for them. They were fantastic to me. I fell ill for a few years, otherwise, I would’ve retired with them.

Have a look at Nu-Way and Williams Dedicated, in Bloomington-Normal. Both have opportunities that provide a stable income. G&D Integrated, in Morton, might be another one. All three of those would be local to you, so you wouldn’t have to deal with truck parking. Red Classic is another dedicated carrier, but, I’m not sure if you are within their hiring area.

Dot Foods hires new cdl school grads, so you're qualified now.

I already switched over to Decker, but I appreciate the advice. Someone from the account I was working on at Schneider tried to go over to Marten but they screwed him over getting a truck that was driveable. I wanted guaranteed pay because the truck I had at the other account had me sitting a lot, and they wouldn't prioritize repairing it; I want to make sure if something out of my control happens that I won't be stuck with a $200 paycheck for the week. Schneider's too big of a company to get anything "ironed out" by talking to them; you either get what they give you or you go somewhere else, so I went somewhere else. I talked to several Decker drivers before I started and they all said it's pretty easy to make more than the minimum. Plus their maintenance program is way better: they actually take care of their equipment, and the trucks come with microwaves, fridge, free wifi, TVs with satelittle service, and CB radios. There was no way to make more money on that Schneide account either: the pay rate was set, whereas at Decker drivers get raises every year until they reach the maximum of 70 cpm. I couldn't be happier to have switched from the Schneider account I was on, but that was only because I did a lot of research before making a jump.

You’re driving a lot nicer stuff, now. And, I’m glad you got out of your previous situation.
