My tester let me float gears, 22 years ago but she did. I’ve taken lots of guys to get their CDL through the years and I’ve never heard of a single one not being allowed to float gears.

Some autos have a Romper Room of sorts. A manual shifting paddle. Its manual mode. To wit equipped with a little logic so you don't go forth and turn that into a learning tool. The Rockwell Meritor had the best one for it's time.

I think the thing with testing is that is you crunch the gears more than once you fail the test
