So, about a month ago I got a used President Grant from a neighbor (the oldschool three button model). He was using it as a base/mobile and had upgraded, so let it go for a good price. I hooked it up in my Pete 388, tested the SWR (about 1.4:1) and it sent and received, but was showing a swing backwards from a deadkey of about 2.5 to just under 2 when talking. I took it to a local "CB shop" (term used very loosely) who used to be a good shop, but moved locations in the past year and lost a real good tech in the process IMO. Anyway, he (the new guy) hooks it up on the bench and in the process of confirming my meters readings, proceeds to flip the knob on his set-up maybe a dozen times, knocks on the side of his power supply switch several times, then scratches his head and spends the next 20 minutes grabbing several books/manuals off a dust covered shelf all the while muttering "hrmph" and "wha..." and the like.
After a good 35-40 minutes, he tells me it's no good, he's not sure what's wrong, but his bench rate is $60 an hr. just to try and find out the problem! he then tells me that once that is done, the actual parts and labor to fix it would probably cost more than the radio is worth. I promptly thanked him for his time, paid the $7.50 bench test fee and beat feet as fast as I could. He might be a helluva nice fella, but justfrom what I witnessed I wouldn't trust him rewiring a running light.
So, any ideas on what could be the problem? I should mention that the radio does tx and rx out to about 1 1/2-2 miles with my Wilson T2000, but as of Friday no longer tx's according to the meter in the radio. it still rxed up to that point, but I unhooked it and replaced it with my backup- Uniden Bearcat 980. So anyone think this radio is fixable/worth it? I paid $50 for it, so not a fortune, but have heard these are/were pretty good radios when working up to specs.....
Thanks in advance O Gurus of Trucker Talk Boxes....
Edit to add- I forgot to mention the previous owner told me he was the 2nd owner, and it supposedly had at least one mod done-an unlocked clarifier- but not sure if anything else....
Any Ideas?

Sounds like some hacker with a golden screwdriver tried to peak it up and didn't adjust it properly, possibly damaging something. You need to take it to a real cb shop and have them go through it and remove any crap mods like "swing" kits etc and realign it to service manual specs...

I agree, however see my post in the "local CB shops" thread here- http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...7953-where-best-cb-shops-located-these-3.html
Unfortunately it seems my area (N. Central FL) is sorely lacking in any shops that even remotely fit the bill..... -
I had a CB that had backward swing. It had the power turn up to high. Try backing the power down. Or just try backing the Mic gain down. And see if that helps.

In my limited experience the older radios are almost always worth fixing. In order to find a good shop you may have to ship the radio.
I have had good luck using R&R communications in Delaware in the past. -
What would you take for it? Or let me know and I'll tell you where I would send it to get it fixed and get a 90 day warranty (cause he does know what he is doing.)

I think that the only thing R&R is good for if you want a splatter box. I got a new Galaxy 44 DX from them. And it talked so well that it could be heard 7-8 channels away. Which is not good.

Dont try to measure the tx audio from the built in meter, the built in meter tells you nothing. Check your audio, rf output and swr with a inline meter, audio is checked with a scope. Judge it more by how it sounds over the air for starters.
