A couple months ago Poly raised driver pay 2 cpm and tacked it onto the per diem pay instead of earned income, which remains at 23 cpm. So the per diem amount is now at 22 cpm, and yes, the amount you're getting taxed on is 23 cpm.

So mathematrucker what do you think of Poly so far? You've been there almost a year right? Any info would greatly be appreciated. Be safe

What worries me about Poly's pay is the high per diem. The IRS says you can only claim $59 per day as per diem. Subtract 20% from that and you are left with $47.20 per day per diem.

So, if Poly is paying .23 per mile in per diem, and multiply that by a 450 mile a day average that equals $103.50 a day per diem. That's $56.30 per day more than is allowed by the IRS. This will show up as extra income at the end of the year for which no social security taxes or income tax has been paid. Guess who gets to pay it? THE DRIVER!

let's say a driver spent 278 days away from home; according to the IRS the driver would be able to claim $13,121.60 in per diem expense. If we calculate 278 days x 450 miles = 125,100 miles x .23= $28,773 in Poly per diem. $28,773-$13,121.60= $15,651.40 more than what is allowed. The soscial security tax alone on $15,651.40 is $2379, then the income tax at 20% is 2654. That's $5033 that the driver will be responsible to pay. Not the company.

So is the high per diem worth it? That's a question each driver will have to answer individually.

I feel nostalgic looking at their website. I remember riding with my dad for a week at a time or longer in the summer when I was a kid and he was a young driver for poly from the grand prairie terminal. Sure would feel strange to work for them lol

Well scratch Poly off, they called back again on the 14th and said that they were sorry but their DM said he didn't think he could ever get me home where I live in Southwest Florida. Oh well, at least they were honest and didn't hire me and then have me be miserable because I was never home. So the look continues.

JD are you still concerned about the per diem situation? Owing the feds has me leery as well. Just curious because I sent an email last night and they sent me an app. back this morning, debating whether or not to fill it out.

Not worried as I know how to put back $ to pay extra taxes. Plus I was told Poly is in the process if changing the pre-diem pay so that it is in line with IRS tax code.
