I have been accused by my friends of over researching things, however I am the one they call when they have a question.
Five months ago, I inquired about Road Master when I was looking at schools, however they would not answer my questions over phone. They wanted to "sit down at their school and talk." I spoke with many drivers, several companies, Fedex trainer, and current and past students. I received mixed reviews, about 50-50.
I had read several posts on here that indicated the school wanted people to fill out all the apps before they would answer Q's. I knew I was a cash student so I was not real keen on that idea. Road Master called me several times, but never answered a single question. Not even one. What I learned about them I found out through outside investigation. I determined they were not the best choice for me.
I did a little more searching and found that Clark State Community College in Springfield Ohio not only offers the training, but also give college credit (9 Credit Hours) for the course. The credit may not be of interest to some. The credit was important to me as I now have 93 credit hours AND a CDL Class A with all endorsements, including school bus. Cost of my course was $5000 and included DOT physical (Good for 2 years), drug screen, background check, TONS of books you will use throughout your career, class room training, Defensive Driver training and certs (Received 5% insurance discount with this), Yard training, road training, state testing fees, and cost of license once CDL was earned from state. Their basic program is much less than this without things like school bus endorsement which is $500.
These guys are top notch and worked with every student. Some students where fast learners and some were not. But Charlie and his team did not give up on anyone. This is what you want when you are spending thousands to learn a new skill.
Clark State is also the people who train the Ohio DOT folks here. This helps you to know better what DOT wants to see for testing, for safety, and for inspections.
I tell you this story because Road Master is not an "Accredited School" by all standards and as such, may not be accepted by all companies. Also, for the same price listed as Road Master you will likely find a college near you that offers the program for the same money. You may even qualify for grants or regular student loans.
IF YOU ARE UNEMPLOYED OR SUCH, YOU LIKELY WILL GO TO SCHOOL FOR FREE THROUGH A COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR TECH SCHOOL. Talk to their program director or admissions office.
An even bigger thing to consider, the last week of my school (middle of June) it became my knowledge that FMCSA may be taking on even tighter restrictions to drivers then what has been talked about as part of CSA2010. Information that was relayed by Charlie is that a bill currently sits in Congress that will require drivers obtain training through an accredited school and even complete continuing education if (likely will) it passes. I do not have a bill number for you to look at, I'm sure if someone else has it they will be glad to post it.
Just something to think about before plunking down your cash or signature on a school note.
Also, the recent changes have not "Grandfathered" anyone or anything, I would not look for them to "Grandfather" the "Accredited Requirement." This is their plan to deal with CDL mills. Don't let yourself get caught on the short end of these changes.
Just saying, research those future requirements until you KNOW what is going to take place, as if it has already happened.
I hope this helps someone.Truckernurse Thanks this.
