Video tapes aren't forever... the magnetic domains on the media will degrade or reorient themselves over time. Leads to fuzzy video, lots of noise, and eventually the tapes won't read at all.

You're right, now they are downloaded to a server, basically a huge hard drive of media. No tapes, no DVD's.
