As Jakebrake already knows, I am trying to get into LTL....My Lord, I can't believe the amount of money that can be made doing this, nor can I understand why it has taken me SEVEN years to get my doubles endorsement! I've had hazmat in the past, but just renewed it last week in hopes of landing an LTL job.

On a strange note, there is a freight company (air freight) near Pittsburgh Int'l Airport...They don't pay squat. Simply amazing; they do kind of the same thing yet don't pay their drivers nearly as well...

I'm glad you guys found good pay and benefits with LTL because I left after 6 months and it was a cheap outfit. Very cheap. I left to haul gasoline with one of the top companies and pay was $1650 a week with only working 60 hours a week. The only problem I see with LTL ( and it shouldn't stop anyone for going after the job) is there's a chance of them going out of business and the driver getting hurt with all that labor. There are driving jobs that pay the same or more but you have to go after them like you all did. Stick with it and make as much as you can. My company had three ways to invest for retirement and it was nothing for a driver to retire with over a million.

I've always made one point about companies and let me see if you guys agree. The good jobs have drivers that retire. So when new drivers are out there looking wouldn't this be one great point to search out?

I have several applications in with gas haulers and tankers in general, but none (that I know of) are paying as well as LTL in this area. Seems like Con-Way pays the best, then Central Transport, then PJAX. I know there are others, but I don't know their pay rates.

I have apps in with Con-Way, Fed-Ex National LTL, Central Transport, PJAX, NEMF, Duie Pyle, and UPS Freight. I've done paper apps with Con-Way, Central, and PJAX, as the others are "accepting applications."

I do agree with your point, GasHauler. Although around here it is rare when a LTL company has openings. Now that I am qualified, I am trying to get in the door of somewhere. I spent several years hauling mail, which was my first experience with good money. However, after three years, two employers, and two layoffs, I am wiser and frustrated. Frustrated enough to get all my endorsements and ##### myself out to anyone who will hire me, lol!

Great point GasHauler. If drivers are retiring from a given company there is obviously a good reason for it. One would surmise that if half the drivers have been there for 15 or more years, it would be a company worth checking out. There really are some great jobs out here that become a career and this is a good way to identify those jobs. Again, great point.

We had one driver that just retired and he only worked for one company his entire life. He started as a loader and then when they went to bottom loading a few drivers got together and taught him how to drive. His record was 28 years driving with no accidents, spills, or contaminations.

You can go to any of our terminals and find a driver with 20 or more years safe driving. It just pays to keep your record clean so you can make the big money and you don't have to slave for it either.

What is the working hour schedules at Conway in Wilkes Barre ? I'd like to work days and have at least Sundays off that I can count on.

As a LTL person and knowing the industry. Working Days is like Gold. Unless your a city P&d driver. Conway is different from others but don't bank on working days when starting out LTL unless your a city driver.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking that I would like some kind of regular schedule. Enjoy my off time with my wife. It seems to me, like my current employer, they said that I would be driving days, but now that's changed, and getting sleep in the day doesn't happen for me. It's looking to me like this isn't the profession for me, but I have to give it at least another year or two before throwing in the towel. I have a good feeling about Conway. I'm thinking that since they're union, they'll have some kind of bill of rights. Some kind of predictable schedule , right ?

Union or non Union for schedule doesn't matter. I'm assuming if your a City driver you'll work days. Like I said CWF is different. I'm not 100% sure cause they use their drivers as dock workers. As for other LTL's if which might be the same as CWF, P&D City works days and has a M-F work week. Almost all LTL's for P&D City drivers work like this. Only one I'm not sure is CWF. Might need to search in the Conway Freight sub Forum and ask around there. Cause I don't know if they designate you just extra board for both Linehaul and City board. Or they have a separate extra board for each City and Linehaul board. Linehaul is nights. Need to ask questions here and at the interview.
