Should be a handle about like a hand valve for the trailer mounted on the column.

Yeah it’s there, right next to the Jonny bar.
Grabbing a handful of either one would make you whoa in a hurry.

Yea on the antilock brakes, someone had cut the wires off the wheel sensors when I got it. Was driving across tennesee on 40 one time and it just shut off. Coasted to the roadside and thought its just got one wire to the motor, pulled the hood open and sure enough the wire to the shutoff solenoid had come loose. fixed it and cranked up and gone in about 3 minutes. Not that simple any more!

    DougA and Oxbow Thank this.

Not really a good picture but the retarder is mounted behind the flywheel (between the crankshaft and flywheel. Basically engine oil under pressure floods the housing and a large impeller in the housing reacts against the fluid creating drag. My 3406 in the picture is rated at 375 hp. I could put the retarder on full at idle, stomp the throttle and actually still slowly gain RPM.

In this picture its the short housing bolted on behind the flywheel housing. The retarder generates a ton of heat so there's a giant oil cooler mounted on the other side. I believe the oil pan is larger and there is a giant control block mounted under the retarder that also is connected to the oil pan. Oil pump is different too as it needs to supply oil to the retarder as well.

I wondered why there was two “hand brakes”. Makes a lot more sense now.

I bet! I know this truck ran west coast and back from Indiana so that makes a lot of sense for going through the mountains.

Thank you for the insight. That’s a brilliant setup in my opinion. Using oil and a impeller to slow things. I’m going to go have a closer look and check out the oil pan, pump, and cooler.

    DougA Thanks this.

Downsides are the braking isn't as immediate as a jake, it makes a lot of heat and they tend to leak a lot. Although the whine it makes sounds super cool.

    DougA and Oxbow Thank this.
