Hi all, I'll be starting traing in marshfield soon since I havn't driven in about 15yrs (used to hual steel). A lot has changed in 15 yrs. Just wondering, does Roehl equipment come with CBs & Sirius Radio, or should I get my own? And what kind of GPS systems do you like I have one in my car I bought for $70, I see trucker GPS systems are $300 -$400 do they give you that much more?
Roehl doesn't provide CB's or Sirius. Get a Sirius, don't worry about getting a CB. I gave my CB to my 9 year old to play with two years ago when I moved into a new truck. Unless you actually like talking on the CB, most customers we go to will call you on your cell phone when they need you in a door or when they are finished unloading you. As for a GPS, YES there is a difference with the "truck" GPS's. You can get a good Garmin truck GPS for about $199. The truck GPS's take into consideration the weight limits for the roads, bridge height, and other truck specific restrictions when calculating routs. Now, that said, YOU are responsible for verifying that the route that the GPS has provided for you is safe and legal for you to drive in a truck. I usually compare the directions that Roehl provides via the Qualcomm, the route my GPS gives me, and what I see in my "truck" road atlas. I look at all three and determine the best route to go to my destination. Roehl makes you take their route and hit the fuel stops that they tell you to, so I make sure that the route I'm taking allows me to get fuel where they want me to. If I find a shorter route that doesn't hit any toll roads, I call my DSR and usually he will reroute me they way I want to go and get me a different fuel stop.
Get a CB! They are great communication tools for road emergencies. Its always nice to know about a road hazard before you are upon it at 63MPH.
I will second that ! among the usual cb banter its always nice to find out about a accident or road construction traffic back-up that's ahead of you. possibly a time saving route will pop up getting you around the traffic jam.
Agreed on the CB, and on a GPS, I have a Rand McNally I bought refurbished for 199 from thier website, I think they are even cheaper than that now.
do the new rand mcnallys allow you to plan a trip from any point in the database, or are you still limited to planning all trips using only your current location as a starting point? formerly both the 510 and the 710 required you to plan all trips starting from your current location.
