I have a Masters degree and am considering getting into trucking based on what my brother-in-law has told me and a friend who used to do the OTR gig. I got out of the world of education long ago and am looking for something different.

I have always been afraid of walls. I was an equipment mechanic but always in a field truck, cause I didn't like the shop. Sure there was shop time but not much of it. I have always trucked in the winter and spent all summer waiting for winter to come back again. If I have a regret I guess it would be I wish I had done it sooner.

Make no no mistake I made better money as a union master mechanic. Had less headaches, maybe not as much worry. For me there is nothing like ridin and guidin in a 30 year old Pete every day. I guess that's the kid in me. Mama used to tell me son if you will do what you love you will never work a day in your life. I finally listened to what she was saying

I spent nine years in retail (I always tell people it was about 8 1/2 years too long!)
Started driving in 1993, so I've got (taking off shoes to count...) 22 years in this year, with no regrets. In fact, I just left my previous company that I was with for 18 of those years, and started over with a new company last year, and I'm at a company now where I feel good about moving up and out of the seat when the time comes. I've always worked local.

Hi The Mariachi, there have been 100 page threads dealing with this subject. IDK, generally, if trucking wasn't in your blood, you are in for a rude awakening. I've heard of people from all walks of life, pitching the past and go into trucking and love it. I was a natural born lever puller, so trucking was great for me, but others, it was just a nightmare. If you can somehow do a ride along, even if you have to pay someone to do it, it could be the best money you ever spent. Trucking schools are very expensive, some with limited results, and the pay for a new driver is pretty low, but there are good paying jobs down the road in a couple of years. Trucking is mostly incentive work, meaning, the more you drive, the more you make, theoretically, but remember, you drive day and night, EVERY day and night, and just make sure that's what you want to do. OH, you can kiss your family life good-bye too, if you have that. Good luck.
Hi Danvitt, I was a driver most of my life. Started with city delivery in pickup trucks, and worked my way up to semi's. I knew that's all I wanted to do, and made it happen. I made an ok living, but that was because I wanted a life outside the truck, so I never got rich in trucking.
Honestly, unless you're Jerry Moyes nobody got rich driving for a living.

No..but I have provided a premium lifestyle for me and my family.........(I can retire now If I chose at 46 years old)

Those megas ,jerry Moyes etc..They didn't get Rich From Blood and sweat, they Got Rich off of people that 'need' a job,

If your still confused..they didn't earn money the old fashioned way,By Earning it, They used strategic business tools with empty promises and SUBPAR wages to drivers for well over 35 years..THATS how they became "rich"

Deregulation made a lot of mega-carriers..":Rich"

I agree they are blood suckers. Point is that very few drivers actually got rich from trucking. Moyes and CL Werner being the only exceptions I can think of. Most drivers especially OTR guys make just enough to keep from going homeless and are constantly chasing their tail.
