Any tips for learning to shift without clutch

Here's a fundamental question:

Do fat men float better than skinny men?

 

Sure! Fat is lighter than water, yet muscle is heavier than water.

So the moral of the story is, "Don't try to muscle it into the gear".

Depends on where you drive. Interstate driving has very little opportunity for practicing shifting. City driving has more opportunity for shifting practice.

I drove grain trucks with 80k on gravel roads in Iowa. You go a mile or two, turn, go a few miles and turn again,get on a local highway, go a few miles and turn onto a blacktop road for a few miles, turn onto another blacktop for a few miles, and repeat 5 or 6 times a day. Plus a few stop signs on the blacktoproads, would get down to first gear, but never stopped rolling, unless there was cross traffic. All the roads are laid out in square miles...easy to find places without a map or gps.

Shift down to 3rd or 4th gear on every gravel turn, and by the time you hit 9th gear it would be time to turn again.....didn’t use 10th much on gravel.

Had a C-13 motor with an Eaton 10 speed. No engine brake. In about 4 months I was floating gears very proficiently. This engine/tranny combo was easy to shift, either way. Not a lot of power, so could spend some time in a gear running up the rpms.

I liked that kind of driving better than interstates.

I also never used a clutch much either. Once you get used to doing it shifting without a clutch comes naturally. However shifting without a clutch is terribly unforgiving of bad habits. You can destroy a gearbox and cause other drive line damage. You can even do this damage using the clutch! This is why I rather (teach) this over trying to write how to do it. Since this is a bit of an old thread I hope the OP did OK with this issue.

 

Thanks. I did OK. I pretty much learned to shift without a clutch. On challenging places, like going up a steep hill, I prefer to shift with clutch. Otherwise I mostly shift without. I tore my bicep a bit a week ago and how I use clutch a bit to ease getting out of gear to go easy on my arm.
