HOS and FMCSA regs are a replacement for unions. Drivers still get screwed because those regulations hurt the driver as much as the company.

The Hours of Service, while flawed and in need of revision, are a set of regulations put in place to limit the number of hours a driver is allowed to drive in a day. Other than those who wish to exceed those limits for the sake of personal gain (and the obvious issues with a lack of split-sleeper options), what does it do to hurt drivers?

The FMSCA regulations are a set of rules put in place to standardize safety across the industry, and while sometimes greatly open for "interpretation" at the hands of less-than-scrupulous inspection officers, they do benefit the industry's overall safety by giving companies and drivers alike a set standard for safety to simplify their every day job.

Partly meant to benefit the driver, but not a protection. Unions would hopefully benefit the driver while punishing companies for trying to harm their employees.

While " simplified " HOS regulations make enforcement efforts standardized and easier on their part, it does absolutely nothing but create a burden on every driver just trying to make a living in a industry that is anything but standard.

Come by us and see if you get protected from discipline for being a weak employee. Also forget the myth that pay only goes by senority, I make more at 3 years in than guys who have been here 20 years. Language in the contract can affect that very easily.

My concern is that 70 hour work weeks are not properly compensated. Making $1200 a week for 70 hours is making $12/hour with overtime. Pretty crap pay and most make far less.

    I agree.
100K per year seems like a fair number for an experienced competent OTR driver all things considered.
