The same way other private companies do, borrowed money. Look at YRC for example, they were proud that they only lost something like $750 million last year.

I agree the postal service is poorly managed and may not survive long term with their current business policies and the decline of bulk rate mail (junk mail), but as of today they do not yet recieve governement funding.

Now, if they default on their borrowing we will be on the hook since Congress signed for and guaranteed the notes. Mostly T bonds and such.

Google says usps is 65 billion in debt since 2007. It is part of the executive branch. You say the gov is loaning it money. Obviously that money will never be paid back. To me that’s being subsidized without technically calling it that.

I do see and note what your saying though.

I can agree with your statement here, and it is sad just how far in debt they have put themselves. It would be much better to privatize the postal system but mandate service levels remain unchanged. Get the government out of managing it all together and let free market competition run it's course.

Actually if you look into their debt you'll see that Congress basically sabotaged them. Their operating cost is basically covered. What all the debt is for is they must fund all pensions of all possible employees for the next 75 years. Not current workforce, but what Congress thinks they might have 75 years from when implemented in 2006

Without that massive liability, they would be operating in the black.

Congress also mandates that USPS keep open facilities that they don't want, don't need, and can't afford.

I stopped buying off Amazon a long while back as well. Majority of places now offer free shipping over x amount of dollars to stay competitive with Amazon... Target is free shipping over $35.

Or pickup in store. If there is something I want today I'll order and pay for it on line. Go to the store and pick up from (usually) customer service up front and out in 5 minutes.

Beats having to find it in a store or wait on shipping. Now if it's something I'm in little hurry to get yea having delivered to the front porch is awesome.

Postal workers are US government employees.
So how is USPS not a government agency?

You are going off the wrong assumption that they are federal employees. They are not.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=are.....69i57j0l3.8094j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

"As a postal worker, you must follow federal rules, and you receive federalbenefits. However, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't consider postal workers federal employees because the postal service is a quasi-federal agency."

"The United States Postal Service employs some 617,000 workers, making it the third-largest civilian employer in the United States behind the federal government and Walmart."
