I don’t think they were thrown away.
More like installed improperly to a point where the chains came off while driving,or to a point where they were damaged and no longer usable.

JoeyJunk, Numb and Oxbow Thank this.

Probably company trucks. A few years ago we were hauling chips from Truckee to Sacramento. Three trips a day and sometimes you'd chain every trip.
One day it was snowing hard on top but once you got down past Blue Canyon it was good road. I pulled into Baxter to take my chains off and there in the snow, in perfect order and directly in place from where they were taken off was a set of brand new chains. Four three-railers, and four singles. Pewag chains...quality stuff. Whoever he was he was prepared. He just undid the clasps, turned the camlocs, and drove out from under them. I hollered at him on the radio and he said to keep the chains. He was never going to chain up another truck or drive in the snow ever again.
I took them home and we used them on our trucks.
I found out later that Cal-Trans usually scoops them up and saves them. At the end of snow season they sell them to a scrapper and have a big part with the proceeds.

I wouldn't know anything about that. But I heard another good place are RxR crossings.

Never got any chains at RR crossings. Got a few winch bars, 9/16 wrenches, strap winders, straps, flashlights, wrappers, and binders . It was a rough crossing just a few miles from the mill.

Is that little restaurant still open on the side road at Baxter? I used to stop there in the 80s and eat occasionally. Really good onion rings as I recall!

    REO6205 Thanks this.
