You’ve definitely put down some miles so far this year. You’re on pace to go well past 1,000 miles. Rest days are always good to throw in there, or days with less miles. Have you noticed with the inclusion of strength training, your form better or just feeling stronger?

Not really, just keeping my HR at 125, and putting down sub 11 minute averages right now instead of 12 minute averages a couple weeks ago.

6 more weeks of this, and if I'm happy with the results, I'll move on to a more appropriate plan for the 100 miler.

Good for you man, keep up that hard work. Winter running, I think is the hardest. Especially when you wake up early and the wind is howling.

Your talk about that 100 miler fuels a desire of mine, to run that Keys 100 miler. I think I will add it to the schedule next year. They want you to have a crew, so I will see if I can talk my brother into crewing me.

That looks like it would be a fun one. Flat and fast, at least if the weather is nice.

If your #'s are close, it looks like you have a lot of capacity in zones 1 and 2. Looks like a hell of a good starting place for training for 100.

I misread your post earlier. I'm not sure if I'm noticing any affect from the stregth training just yet.

I haven't really tried any fast runs yet, and honestly, I doubt I see anything noticeable until I get into some speed work or get back running in the mountains.

I keep gaining weight though, and I notice the difference in physique. I know I'm gaining strength, and that's what I need.

Overall, I feel like my form may be suffering from volume. I feel like I'm handling it pretty well, for now anyway.

With January in the books, I knocked out 100 miles. With how cold it’s been, I will take the mileage and the pace. I have a 5k race tomorrow for the professional hockey team in town. You finish the race at Center Ice, so that’s nice will be cool. At race time, the temperature is expected to be 9 degrees.

Good miles, and good luck tomorrow! I'm sure you'll knock out 5k with a PR.

I've slowed down with the crap weather we've had. Still too much ice to run the roads like I prefer.

I've mostly been on the treadmill, and due to some knee pain, the last 4 or 5 days have been 15% treadmill hikes or stairmaster.

Since my main goal is a certain HR for a certain time, it's worked. My treadmill and stairmaster times are included here.

My miles have been much slower than yours though. Let us know how the race goes.

I appreciate the kind words and I’m hoping to put down a good time today. It’s a pretty popular race, so I hope I don’t start too far back we’re in dodging people for the first mile to get to some open road and run the pace I want.

The past two runs have had a little bit of pain in my shins, so I think I might switch to the shoes with a little more bounce to them.

When you’re on the treadmill, how long do you run for? I did one treadmill run for 45 minutes and it was about all I wanted. I’ve heard the stairmaster is an arse kicker too. You’ve but in a lot of good work to start the year man, good for you! You’re probably seeing some really good gains in your endurance with those Z2 workouts, VO2 is probably taking some solid gains.

I hope that knee pain doesn’t linger for you, before we know it spring time will be here and we will be wanting to run much more outside. Is it like an ACL/MCL pain or a meniscus issue where you feel the bone on bone contact?

I've wondered how big an issue those starting lines were with these road races. That wasn't an issue with the one race I've done, but I'm betting this marathon will be different.

I hate the treadmill too, but I have to remember it's just a tool to help me get where I want to be. The treadmills at my gym will only go one hour, so that’s what I've been doing.

The stairmaster is one hell of a tool. Great for muscular endurance work. With pretty much a 50% vertical, a person can really see they're lacking in certain areas of fitness with one.

I did another HR drift test last weekend since I've been running at the gym so much. Going off the 3%ish of HR drift allowed, my Z2 limit has gone from 125 to 137.

My V02 max (according to Garmin) took a hit at the first of the month, dropping to 144. The dahm watch likes it when you go fast with a high HR. It also showed my training as unproductive. Since my paces have sped up though, V02 is creeping back up.

Looking at a chart for knee pain, it looks like a meniscus issue. I've backed off my heavy squats and walking lunges, working on some stretching, hip mobility, and ankle flex to help remedy that. I'm really figuring it's a lack of stabilizing muscle, and my increased running volume.

I've never really experienced any shin pain, but I've heard it can be rough. Are there any stretches, or muscle work that help that, or just cutting volume?

The issue with the starting lines are people think they are faster than what they really are or what they want to run. They just want to get out on the course and will take their time. I line up with the pace I want to run at. This morning it took about a half mile to get to wide open road to make some moves. 5K’s are tougher than the one Half I ran. There’s less people running half and fulls.

You make a great point about using the treadmill and stairmaster as tools to build the foundation, I like that philosophy and will need to keep that mindset instead of the crappy “got to run on the treadmill”

Sounds like you’ve made some really good gains so far this month with that Z2. I’ve read somewhere that VO-2 improves with higher zone workouts, I will see if I can find that article. I wonder why the watch thinks your workouts are unproductive? Moving the body and working the heart is always productive, at least was the way I thought.

I wonder if there’s some swelling in your knee possibly? Does ice or heat help take away some pain? Does a compression sleeve over the knee help? But you could be on to something with the muscles around it not being strong enough yet for the added workload.

So I started the year out with a really good stretch program on the Pliability App, then with traveling for work, I haven’t been as disciplined with it. So that definitely could be something to it. I will be getting back to the program today. I also ordered a cold plunge with the ability to recirculate water. I have one now, but you just fill it and the water temp is whatever it wants to be. It’s frozen now, for obvious reasons. And I can’t use it in the summer time because it is hard to keep it cold enough to be effective. So with my HSA through work, I splurged and got a decent one.
