Figured I'd update this. Started jogging after i posted. Came down with Kung Flu early August, and didn't hit a lick with excercise all that month.
Decided the race was way out of reach, but wanted to continue.
Started picking up a few miles jog'ish ing and a few more on the bike a couple times a week.
I'll update this as I go. Keep in mind I've never been a runner or athlete of any kind, so these #'s won't be impressive.
Oxbow Thanks this. -

Running, especially for us old truck drivers is not the best bet for exercise. They’re finding more and more that it’s just not good for your joints and overall skeletal system. You’re better off with just brisk walking. Find some good long hills to hike up. Some stairs to walk up and down. Stuff like that. Get your heart rate up into an aerobic range and keep it there for 30 minutes is really all you need to do. Bring a set of dumbbells and a folding bench, and you can keep a nice muscle tone once you lose the fat. That’s all you really need.

But running works your heart in a way that no excercise I've done even comes close to.
So I'll continue for now. Good stretching and running technique has seemed to keep my joints in ok shape so far
