Well for one, I thought it would make for an interesting topic if others happened to have experienced anything like I did. And for two, I've had to do all of my backing skills in a manual (because my school doesn't have many automatics to go around).

I'll just stay out of this thread as I don't understand what it is about. I don't want to stop you from doing whatever it is you want to do. I learned some complicated stuff and it's 100 times easier for me to learn complicated mental things than even moderate manual skills, so maybe some of that is going on, or not. I can suggest it is not easier to learn something difficult while thinking about other things or focusing on how much stress you are feeling while you do it. EVERY TASK from brain surgery to knitting is a series of smaller and simpler tasks stacked to make the big complicated task, or that is how they teach pilots to fly, which is pretty complicated. IMO, EVERY task can be earned if you break down each portion to a recipe of what to do, what to look at, what to think, and what to use to judge are you too far left/right, etc. I call it the paint-by-numbers method, even though nobody sells paint by number paintings anymore.

I think you forget that people learn at different pace, I think all I needed was more time, and I'm telling you I was not going to learn it in time lol. We only had a few weeks of drive time and only a few hours for the days we had classes, we had a large class and you a different instructor everyday with different teaching methods. All these factors in on my decisions to switch on the third day, yes I already knew I wasn't going to make it on day 3, I'm someone that analyzed everything I do, so I saw that I wasn't going to learn it on time, I already took a loan that I'm going to repay as soon as I get out of school, I switched, I focused on backing and the road test instead.

I heard there's even manuals with these new engines that you don't even have to double clutch you just clutch to gear like a car...

I was gonna say i never understood the concept that its hard on the knees and shoulder driving a stick shift... Lol what are u guys doing to cause so much pain?? I touch the clutch maybe a handful of times a day if i cant perfectly time a rolling stop... Even coming to a stop sign u can just downshift and keep rolling if u time it properly.. same thing in traffic jams.. I roll thru LA rush hour hardly ever touching the clutch or brake. And the stick should slide in the hole with minimal pressure. If its hurting your arm or ur shoulder you should practice more often and get smoother on what ur doing, im sure the transmission is in much more pain if thats the case

Absolutely! I hate driving an automatic in a car. And these guys who say "I like shifting, but not in traffic" tell me that you don't like shifting. If you like shifting, thats an excellent opportunity to get some in.

I mean I had 3 weeks, and a week of that was class time. All I will say is that it’s a good thing it’s 2025, and not 10 years ago or longer. All of you would have failed out and been onto other careers.

What’s hard on your knees is getting in and out of the truck. I had a guy that can’t spell truck show me 10 years ago how I was twisting my knees unbeknownst to me getting in a 379 Pete. I paid attention and now have a new habit, my knees are better at 50 than they were at 40.

It’s called work for a reason it’s taxing on your body or they wouldn’t call it work. I know some ol guys that move slow drag their feet a touch but show up everyday to row them gears. I don’t hear them complain about much.

I don’t judge a guy on what he drives but how he drives it. Most a trained monkey can do better

I'm also glad it's not a hundred years ago, so that I have an automatic car I can drive instead of a Model T or a horse and buggy.
