I’ve been with my current company for 5 years now primarily hauling asphalt paving roads. Occasionally we haul other materials such as sand, rock, limerock, G.A.B., etc. We don’t get laid off during winter like in the northern states, but work does slow down. I don’t have to be at work until 9 AM today. We’ll sometimes haul those other materials when it’s too cold to pave or raining, but it gets slow if there’s not a current job that needs those materials hauled. Dump trucking is not the greatest way for a CDL holder to make a living, but it was my entry into truck driving to gain experience AND not have to go OTR.

Yeah, I hauled "schluck" for a spell, as a company driver, and was an excellent job, I just couldn't make it on UC during the winter. We had a bunch of O/Os that were crabby old farts, didn't get along with us "company " drivers( jerks, they were) and quite frankly, you'd be a fool to do anything else in trucking. Best part was, the "shovelers" would want you to help, I said, "hey, I picked my job, you picked yours",,:p
