anyone else starting millis 10/19/09?

Thats strange i was talking to the guy that trained me the other day and his last student two weeks ago got out of his truck and right into his own truck after taking his road test with the company. They also only have the one school open right now which means they are only hiring about 6 to 10 people a month out of the school. They are also getting new trucks in right now and yes there are some people that dont make it out on the road more than a few weeks before deciding this is not for them.

 

He said he left them 2 years ago. How is that relevent to today?

 

They haven't given me any promises of any type of hometime yet, so I dunno. I figure i'll be out a few weeks at a time regardless.. can't make money if the wheels aren't turning and being home every week, that isn't going to happen. I really appreciate your input and we'll just have to see what happens. I'm not saying the company is gold or anything, but i've heard it's a pretty good place to work. Especially to start out.

Spanky.. I've heard the same thing from several drivers from other companies as well. I work in shipping/receiving, so I talk to alot of different drivers. They said Millis is doing pretty well with miles right now and they really do work with you to get you home when they can. I guess i'll find out in about 3 weeks

 

Depends on who you are working for. A lot of companies that make little or no effort to get you home would have you believe that.
I know of some jobs where you may be sitting out a reset at a truckstop in who knows where which is definitely not turning any wheels.
Or unload on friday, and sorry, "can't load you until monday".

I get usually 2100-3100 miles per week and have never missed a weekend in 3 years since I started here. And yes that is OTR.
Not trying to sound arrogant, just saying it is possible. And I realize those jobs are harder to get the way things are right now, but they are out there.
Keep at it, and don't believe the myth about having to stay out all the time to earn a decent check.

Oh I'm not saying it's easy. We haven't hired anybody in over a year except for a few expansion openings(new yards).
I came along when things were still moving pretty good all over and we have to believe it will come back.
I might be wrong, but I'll not side with the gloom and doomers.

I realize everyone has to pay their dues, lord knows I did.
My main point was not to believe that staying out longer equals more miles.
Sometimes it may mean just the opposite.

 

i guess that makes sense.. never really thought about it. I guess just starting out i'll take whatever they give me. I have a very supportive wife that understands it's gonna be hard at times, but from what i hear millis gets you home pretty regularly (about every 2 weeks or better). From other companies that get you home maybe a day for every 3 weeks your out, that is pretty good.

 

I was asking the OP how long after he applied with them did they contact him. I applied so that I can go thru their school and then drive for them afterwards.

 

oh sorry man, i didn't know you were talking to me.. it was right around a month i would guess.. call and check on your application. They are very friendly and will help you all they can. As far as I know, they still have openings for their Oct. 19th class here in Ohio. Good luck, if you need anything let me know

 

Oh, I completely understand. I've been there. Let me give you an example of what I'm talking about with some companies.
I've known a couple of people with Celadon that would stay out 3-4 weeks sometime getting around 1800 or so each week.
There is a Pilot on I-95 that is full on Celadons on the weekends because they have a major shipper nearby. They start coming in on friday and saturday and sit, no layover pay. They call it mandatory restart.
Then monday the loads break loose and they go to work.
It doesn't happen to every driver every weekend, but it's a common practice.
