Been passing my CDL practice tests recently and now moving onto looking at schools. One school that stands out is cdldrivingacademy only thing is the closest one is in Tallahassee and I’m in Miami.

There’s closer schools near me mostly college courses for 3k but cdldrivingacademy is sticking out even though it’s gonna be 7-8k with housing travel food etc.

First they offer video courses so you can study at home before actually flying out to them which I’d probably stay 3-4 weeks. The videos are kinda the main reason I’m looking at this school. Takes me awhile to learn so having an edge studying at home could help me out. They also offer test retakes I believe which is a plus and offer lifetime job placement which is another plus.

Only downside for me is the price right now and not really interested in job placement currently looking at Melton since I believe they hire out of Miami last time I checked their website.

Has anyone been to this driving school would like to hear your opinions really only seen stuff on YouTube about them not much else.

Where do you plan to work? The industry is in a recession. LOTS of newbies are NOT getting hired. Miami is almost as close to a trucking black hole as one can get. So just walking around with a CDL in your pocket shouldn't be your goal. Getting hired and working after school should be your goal, I would think. If there is anything in your background that makes you not the ideal candidate for every trucking company, you really need to find the employer than can/will hire you before you give to flips about what CDL school to attend. Some trucking companies only hire from specific CDL schools or they have their own CDL school. Why go to a CDL school that doesn't allow you to work for the company you want to work for?

You may think, like 99.999999999% of newbies than any driving job is a good driving job. the 80-90% of newbies that quit a few months after starting to work as a CDL driver might disagree. CDL school is a rushed 3 week affair. It's not like 4 years of college where you have lots and lots of time to research employers. It's 3 weeks and almost every waking moment is used by you for something else. Often classes are 10-12 hours per day.

Do yourself a favor. Research the trucking companies with terminals in your area. Take as much time as necessary to find the one you want to work for and then find out from that company what CDL school is the one they recommend. NOT all employers are honest or nice places to work. If you are spending your money to go to CDL school, don't go to the wrong one. Being desperate doesn't make an employer a good place to work. LOTS of trucking company web sites advertise false or misleading information about pay and schedules. This forum has lots of info about employers and you can also give your contact info to some of their other drivers and talk to those drivers about all of the things that make a job good, bad, or in between.

160 Driving Academy and other schools partner with the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program to offer tuition-free CDL training for eligible unemployed or low-income individuals. The grant covers training costs, including the 160-hour course, and does not require repayment. Applicants must contact their local American Job Center to apply.

Well melton is my first choice last choice would be western express for a year or two and then for everything in between Chinatown and a few others already gave me lots to look at around Miami. If it comes down to it I could move or get a forwarding address since I don’t plan on being home.

Well I figured I’d go to a CDL school privately this one specifically since it seems they give you some chances unlike if I go to a company if I screw up I’m probably out on the spot.

Do you know if they allow retakes? That’s sorta the only thing I’m worried about. If I fail the pre trip inspection, driving test etc.

I haven't attended a school that didn't offer retests. No need to worry though. You'll do fine.
You can have the Pre-Trip Inspection points memorized before you start school. Now that most schools don't even require drivers to learn manual shifting, obtaining your CDL on the first shot became so much easier.

Was reading some reviews on 160 seems some people say they’re 10+ people per truck and they just push you out is there any truth to this? Also I do want my manual endorsement don’t want any restrictions holding me back in the future.

Also any videos or reading material that’s recommended for the pre trip inspection. I’ve seen lots of different information online. Some saying you need to memorize 200+ parts others saying 90 don’t really know where to even start when it comes to that.

Call Dot Foods and ask to speak to a driver recruiter. Once you reach them, ask them if they have any schools in the Miami area they work with. If they have a partnering school, they will pay for your school and give you a job, provided Dot accepts you. They desperately need CDS drivers in the area. If you’re bilingual, that’s a huge plus. There is the potential to make $100K and regularly be home, possibly home nightly.

160 is the worst of the worst. Many companies won’t consider their grads for potential employment.
