I just saw the battery idea on a 780 Volvo with a 5000w inverter. The guy had all the batteries wired together then into the storage area under the bunk to a breaker box/switch box idea. He also wired it for shore power for easy recharging and/or powering his appliances. All the batteries were charged from the trucks charging system. After he started the truck he would need to flip a switch to open the line to charge the remote batteries. That he did to insure he always had starting power. According to him he had been using this system for two years now with only one battery failure.
anyone interested in cheap a/c

For anyone who wants the battery deal, there are 7v relays that will automatically isolate batteries when the rig is shut down. When the alternator is charging, the circuit closes and ALL batteries receive a charge. Used to be used on the "3+1" systems if that helps to find the solenoid/relay.
Martinsloshed and dannythetrucker Thank this. -
just add a ESM to the truck it's the size of one battery even if the trucks batteries are dead the ESM is what starts the truck not the batteries just need enough power in the batteries for the ecm to power up..... http://www.maxwell.com/products/ultracapacitors/products/engine-start-module
sloshed Thanks this. -
Has anyone used them? -
I had a Dometic Commercial unit on my last rig.
Going to try a Dometic Penguin this time around, for the lower profile on this, my new truck:
Friend of mine runs a low profile one on his Cascadia, never had a problem with it. Also know guys that have ran the same window AC unit for many years without a problem. Not like you go down the road with it hanging out the window...
As far as the split systems go, I think they would last just fine on a big rig, seeing as they are made for them!
I got a quote on one, @$4700 for a new 14k BTU one, or $1495 for a used 14k BTU one. Both plus shipping! Not worth it to me, especially seeing as it is about physically impossible for them to be as good as a rooftop unit of the same BTU rating. Cool air falls, hot air rises, no way around it.
MartinCetane+ Thanks this. -
Where did you get the pricing on the dometic commercial split systems from? -

Leftlanetrucking, you did what I decided I'm going to do, the Honda and a roof mount.
i see in your pictures you built a box for it. I was worried about the gen. Getting over heated since it is air cooled. How did you over come this problem??? -
Just saw this sorry.
The rear of the enclosure is fully open. The door on the front sits higher than the bottom of the generator. This is where the generator gets it's fresh air. Never had a single issue out of it.
However you do it, leave the back open and leave at least a gap at the front.
This is the new box I made on the Western Star, it still needs a door, but you get the idea:

Exhaust is again just above the top of the frame, giving the gases an easy way out.
Those vent holes at the bottom left of the generator are air inlets, so they have to be left open when running.\
