I've been thinking about changing my setup by completely removing my headache rack, getting a headboard put on the trailer and installing a tool/storage box between the frame rails on the truck with a lid that lifts up from the driver side. I've only seen this used once a long time ago but can't find anything on such tool boxes. I figured this would be more beneficial so I could get my tarps off the deck and store them in the boxes on the trailer by moving my straps to a frame box which to me seems to be a little less up and down off the truck dragging securment out plus deduct some additional weight. It tends to be a PITA that a lot of times I have to unstrap my tarps and move them to load then re-secure them. Anyone know where I can find such a tool box and if it would actually be worth it in the end? Can't find anything else about the subject here so its a new thread.
Anyone using such a toolbox?

Here you go. Try this; http://www.truckbox.com/inframetoolboxes.html
Skunk_Truck_2590 Thanks this. -
I like the one with the locking T-handle but it opens front to back and vise versa depending on which way its installed. Plus its a bit small. The one I saw was on a stretched pete that ran the full length of the frames open span between the cross members behind the cab and stopped just short of the nose of the trailer so it didn't restrict it from opening fully and opened up from the side. The guy actually had all his chains, binders, straps and load bar stored in it and kept his tarps in the trailer boxes. He had a headache rack but it was merely just a cab guard with no kind of attachments or storage. I suppose it was custom built.
blacklabel Thanks this. -
Ask them to make a custom size for you. I'm sure they will.

There isn't very much room in the type of box you describe. I think it would be awkward to access, always leaning over and reaching down.
I've rearranged my set up to having everything except the tarps in 2-60" boxes on the trailer. Everything is in Rubbermaid totes. Very tidy. I'm really liking my set up.
The tarps go on the deck but don't usually stay rolled up for very long. -
The one I saw had a "T" divider in it made of a thin gauge aluminum. One side for chains, the other wide enough for rolled straps to be lined up next to each other and binders where on the end. The guy kept his bungee's hooked under the trailer on the support brackets along with extra dunnage that wouldn't fit between the landing gear frame. Being dumb, I should have asked when I was looking at it but I wasn't even a driver at that time in my life. It was really nice though with a polished stainless steel top and 2 gas shocks to hold it open. Only thing I didn't pay attention to which is crossing my mind now is how he had it built in conjuction with the extra carrier bearing mount for the driver shaft since it was stretched if it was even in the way at all.
