WOW! A 48' Reefer for Under 7K? WOW! That's unbelievable! Tell me Where YOU'RE AT !!! What's the name of the trailer? What year is it? Does the reefer work? Is it insulated inside? Does the trailer have a vent? In other words, what condition is it in???
    That is Dirt Cheap!

Believe it or not, we started off with a 45' van. And we still were able to use it. That was for Produce.
48' is Common to have.,, but you might run into a situation where a 53' is required.
Produce you can do 48'. But being hooked up with companies hauling food products, you would definitely be better off with the 53'
Now a days more companies want 53's.
    You can decide from there.

    Easier said than done.

Most if not all shippers want to go through a broker because brokers offer "one call services".

If you are an O/O with one truck, you are very little use to them. That's not to say that the "One horse" O/O can't do that (door knocking) but, you'll have to knock on at least 100 doors before you get a bite.

A better idea would be to get together with other O/Os in an area to offer the services and establish lanes. I'm currently getting together with O/Os like this as I meet them and that might fit the needs of a shippers better than to go alone.

great idea...and i did not say that but it is true..alot of them want more trailers to spot etc,etc,etc...great idea on getting o/o's together for the ''area''..also food for thought is getting drivers to ''slip seat'' and keep the loads rolling 24/7 and that will get guys home too..cuts back on ''burnout'' and drivers are happier..

If you get this done just think of the ''service'' you can provide..100% 24/7...count me in...lol.

If all of us c.d.l. Holders could work together on this plan then we could hopefully cut this #### broker out...they are killing us..

The amazing part is that I'm running into brokers who have newer MC#'s and they claim to know more about the loads.....:biggrin_2552:

Freight brokers are becoming as Dump Truck brokers.....they run the biz off a cell phone and a laptop and take at least 10% for 1% of the work, with about .0000001% of the liability. Then they get offended when we ask them to bump up the rate a few cents.
It's like "Oh, you want tarp pay? For that load of lumber? Alright, I'll kick in another $25 but that load is already costing me money and your cut is far generous" ($.80/m) ..........:biggrin_2554:

A-holes. and I think they're getting far more than 10%. You KNOW these shippers are getting reamed to the tune of $200 or so to tarp and secure. That's the biggest aggravation in the whole business. They'll pay ANYONE but the guy doing it. They'll even approve $300 for lumpers, but do it yourself and get $20. That's F-in insane!

Securement and tarping should be paid on an hourly basis IMHO.

I know, but even 10% is way generous IMHO for someone who uses the phone and a laptop and has almost 0% liability.

I have had many offers from shippers who would like to cut-out the brokers and go direct with me and other O/O's but as we all know, the fine print protects the broker from competition.

Have to disappoint you...I very much do not agree with you on this one. You are opening something here that we could discuss for months and years all the pros and cons. And why is the ecconomy right now where it is?, and WHO is responsible for that?, and how only a handful of inconceivably (hope spelled it correctly?) greedy very bad people here in the US screwed up the rest of us here, but the rest of the world too?. It is all about chain reaction.... What they did to all of us is literally a genocide...wonder will any of them ever be punished for that? Were Hitler's guys worse?? Yet, we all know how they (or most of them) ended, right? For these guys here today it is just "business as usual" right? Were all the intelligent experts in ecconomics and other branches so stupid not to see it coming??? I don't think so and you understand where I'm going to with this. But let's not get here into politics...this is not an appropriate place for that...we can't do anything to change the past anyway... we rather need to focus on how to survive right now and this very web site is giving us a wonderful opportunity to do so by trying to help each other the best we can. Because TOGETHER WE CAN! That kind of attitude is nothing new...the cave people figured it out long before our times. That's how they survived and by doing that enabled us to be right here right now.
People fail in their businesses for various reasons or unfortunate circumstances, but many of them because they were simply blinded by the greed and flying to close to the sun.
I have no illusions it is not going to be really very hard under today's circumstances for me to succeed or even just to survive as an o/o... should I consider giving it up because of that?
The most beautiful forests grew up on the ashes of the former ones....because of the ashes!
So, let's just try to use the ashes of those burning right now around us and go out there and do what we know the best...drive our trucks and spend that hard earned dollar as wise as possible and SAVE as much as we can.
Talking about spending wisely...if you'd allow me, let me give a piece of an advice to those who don't know that yet or are just not doing it yet... I saved thousands of dollars by investing in a convertor and installing a fridge and a microwave in my truck 5 years ago. As far as I am concerned all those restaurants and fast foods at the truckstops can go broke. And...1-2 thermos of coffee per day cost me 7-8 bucks a month.
Have no APU on my truck, but no extra idling of the engine is reqired for that.

But we are forgetting the main problem as i have seen this for 20 years...

There are just to many ''drivers'' willing to work for free...I do not no why?. But they have proven to me in 20 years that they will work for free...I have seen this up until 1 month ago..look at this..

TARPING - SEEN DRIVERS DO IT FOR FREE

LUMPING- SEEN DRIVERS DO IT FOR FREE

OUT OF ROUTE MILES- SEEN DRIVERS DO IT FOR FREE

SITTING FOR MANY HOURS AT DOCKS- SEEN DRIVERS DO IT FOR FREE

LAYOVER -SEEN DRIVERS DO IT FOR FREE

BREAKDOWNS ON HIGHWAY-SEEN DRIVERS DO IT FOR FREE

AT SHOPS GETTING WORK DONE ON ''COMPANY TRUCK''-SEEN DRIVERS DO IT FOR FREE

EXTRA P/U AND DEL-SEEN DRIVERS DO IT FOR FREE

YOU CAN KEEP ADDING TO LIST OF DRIVERS FOR SOME ''ODD'' REASON WORKING FOR FREE...IT AMAZES ME...

THIS IS ONE OF THE PROBLEMS WE HAVE ''DRIVERS''
