if you were asking me then when i say 15% it was just that. His truck had a total idle time of 15%. They have become nazi's over there.

Rob, since you have taken the time and trouble to get all of those facts together. Please take the time to find out the following:
    1. How many trucks does Werner have on the road
    2. How many drivers do they currently have on the payroll
    3. What is the average age of their drivers
    4. What is the longivity of their drivers

EVERYONE in the industry know that longivity speaks volumes when you discuss any company. Don't you agree?
If you come up with honest statistics, I think you might be very suprised at your findings.
    Thank you.

OK I hate to do this but I will anyway.

If the brochure you have is the same one I had, it states first year drivers average 33cpm, not that they start there. If yours actually states that is your starting rate, keep it you may need it if you ever decide to drive. There are many ways to skew the numbers and many companies do just that. I actually took the time to talk to them about these things before I started.

The training program has been at 300 hours for longer than you have been a member of this site, and I as well.

Yes they are getting more aggressive with idling, but if you have an apu, why idle? No not all trucks have apu and if I did not I would idle as needed for comfort just as I do now.

Don't know about the Dac'd thing as I have not had first hand experience with this and I know you do not either. I do know a few people who have not been Dac'd when they quit though. As for waiting on trucks you are probably correct and this is not right. It is however the way it is for many a many companies right now. As for the doubled training thing see above.

It says you can AVERAGE .33 CPM which you can easily with bonuses, which are not nearly as hard to get as people make out. I was there 18 months I got 7 bonuses I never actually TRIED ever to get a bonus.

The training period NEEDED to be increased, as far as I am concerned it is still entirely too easy to get to be alone behind the wheel of a big truck, it doesn't make life easier for the experienced drivers one, it damages the reputation of ALL truck drivers when newbies screw up, and I dont have exact stats but I am sure while all autos driven by inexpierenced people are possibly deadly instruments the likely hood of killing someone in a big truck is much higher then in a car. When I went through training it was 375 hours BEHIND THE WHEEL (aka logged on line 3)

Everyone is gung ho on idling, I think Schneider's policy is worse then Werner's. Schenider doesn't have APUs on most of their fleet either. Werner did NOT lower a drivers pay to save themselves during the fuel crisis. Lowering a driver to 60 from 65 drops pay, for instance, in my husbands case 38.00 a day he is rolling. No, they instead added APUS to most of their fleet. So that says something to me.

    1. That is the average mileage pay for the 1st year not what you start out at.......... if you do your job well you will get bonuses, you get more for multiple stop loads, going to new york city, loads for under 100 miles etc etc.

    2. Not sure when this was.... but my trainer was working for werner for 3 years and he had to do 300 hours...
And from what I have seen more experience is good not bad before going solo.

    3. This is not true. I do not have an apu on my truck and I idle whenever it gets below 20 degrees or so and haven't had any problems. Werners policy is that you stay below the idle average of your division. So if all of midwest regionals idle avg is 31% for january I should aim to stay below that. This seems fair to me as my idle is at 12% right now and I dont really try to hard to keep it down.

They are of course more strick on idleing on trucks with an APU........ if you have an APU you shouldnt really be idling at all.

    4. I havent really been sitting at all so I dont see that as being a problem, I also got my truck a day after I finished training back in November. It could be differant now i suppose.

And for better options starting out........... I was 21 and I dont want to run hazmat. All my choices were basically large companies like werner. There are just as many posts on these forums about swift or schnider so I don't really see how werner is such as bad choice for your 1st year or so.

For the record the record this is how the discourse on my choosing a company went once i decided to be a truck driver:

Hey I want to be a truck driver, CR England says they will train me free!
Oh look Schneider will train me free too!
Hmm the CR England recruiter says I can own my own truck right out of school! COOL!
CR England says I can make 120k owning my own truck wow!!
Schneider says I cannot own my own truck right away BOO!
I'm going to CR England! Let me turn in my 2 weeks notice with my telephone gig!
Hmmm... weird the security officer at my telephone gig said his cousin go royally screwed by CR England hmmm...
I decided to go to Schneider!
Yay Schneider accepted me after jumping through 1000000 hoops! I start in 2 weeks!
Boo Schneider hates children and my service dogs screw them!
Hmmm I still want to truck drive... lets look and see what other options I have.
Hey look Werner uses paperless logs! Wow thats so cool, that means they have a pc in the truck awesome!
Werner set me up for school!
Wow this is harder then I thought maybe I should do something else...
No this is fun, even if it is hard!
    Look I got my CDL!
Yay starting at Werner ooo big Peterbilt 379 ooo I love long noses yay!

So to be fair most people who start have as much knowledge as I did, the 120k a year thing sold off by CR England seemed awesome, we aren't USED to being screwed by a co. Few industries lie like trucking. The problem is most people dont get to 'Hmm this is harder then I thought' until they are off by themselves, then 4 weeks later its the cos fault.

I chose Werner because at the time of making the choice the paperless logs seemed awesome, and I thought they had like computers and GPS in their trucks plus they had the awesome long nose trucks I really wanted to drive....

It turned out good in my case. But I can see if everyone comes in as blind as I did, and they arent prepared for the lack of hometime then yes it could be an issue. I was lucky, my hubby and I did it together. Or this would have possibly turned out differently.

Just a question, how old is your printed brochure?
John Steele the exec VP at Werner was quoted as saying his company reduced pay "in isolated cases" for the new dedicated fleet drivers, but no changes were made for the experienced operators.
Werner is NOT the only carrier that's reduced their starting drivers' pay. USA Truck for example has cut their's THREE times in the last nine months. From 34 to 31. For experienced drivers the pay has remained steady.
Did you know that Celadon had 9,700 driver applications for 200 posistions?

Don't you think that more training hours is a good thing? I sure do.

Re: APU, how many tractors don't have them? What is the %? Also, do you think that it could have something to do with where the driver is?

Regarding the continuous hiring, Werner isnt the only carrier who continues to hire, are they? If a driver quits, that is supposed to be put on the DAC isn't it? Don't all carrier put driver information on it?

But, it's really not anything that you need to worry about since you won't ever have to go to work for them. LOL :biggrin_25525:
