Why start at a company that has high turnover rates. If you go out and look nobody says you have to go to these companies that your school may have listed. The schools always want to tell their students to start at the bottom feeders because it reflects back on their record. They could care less about you as a driver. Use your Father and Uncle as references and let them guide you where to go. Tell the better companies that you've been around trucks for a long time. If your record is clean then you've got an equal chance to get hired on with a decent company just as well as the so called starter companies. Once you go into the companies you will find out that not all of them require experience and will give you a shot if your first appearance comes off well. All I'm saying is don't start looking at the bottom first unless you're forced to. If you have a clean record start at the top and work down. Good luck.

Atlanta is a large hub for trucking. Just going door to door would be better than filing an application on-line to the mega-carriers.

    Ralph,
I am looking at starter companies and so called mega carriers,I have no exp. or CDL I am 46 with a decent work history and driving record is clean for since 2006. I am looking at these Companies to get my start and 1yr. exp. so I can do local or something else or better carrier. Here are the companies I am looking at. Swift,Stevens,Schneider,Werner,Knight,Millis,Prime,Pam Transport,USA Truck. I also cannot go to a CDL school or college ect. I owe student loans from a degree in IT that I cannot get a job in no exp. So I have to go the starter company route.I am not afraid to be away from home divorced grown kids.I want to see the Country I am ex millitary and know I may not make 25-35 grand the first yr. I always ask questions if I'm not sure of something or don't know and am not afraid to ask questions. What are your suggestions for someone like me and yes I know there is good and bad in every company I want to do this and can do it.I am here for help ,suggestions and research, info to learn more about the industry and companies.Brad.

Get your CDL and kick down doors @ the major ltl carriers. You're in a good industrial area so they will have openings. Take an entry level position if they offer it and work your way up. Work on the dock hustling freight in and out of trailers if that's where you start. ANY position with an ltl carrier will pay more in wages and benefits than the best otr mega job. Taking the OTR TL mega fleet road is taking a road to no where.

If you're unable to get on with an ltl carrier find a job @ a private fleet. Again, better pay, benefits and retirement.

beermooch.. if you would need transportation we could work something out. i think i am going to drive myself as i will be living only about an hour and 15 minutes from the school and hope to cut the cost some if i go home on weekends. might even think about sleeping in my van if i keep it but might get a little chilly in april still.

I don't have a cae needed for a job at a local carrier and I have bad credit as well as 25,000 in student loans for IT that I cannot find a entry level job in since graduating college in 2007,I am unable to get finacial aid.So to get my CDL I have to go through a carrier for a yr. to pay for school and get the exp. to go local or something else in trucking or move to a better company and that's what I'm looking at being ex Army I can deal with the B.S. for a yr. if they treat me good I may stay longer I am also not afraid of hard work ect. Are any of the companies I mentioned good to start at besides Schneider,Werner I know they are good need to know about the others Stevens,Swift,Knight,Millis,Prime,Pam Transport,USA Truck,FFE,Central Refer.

If Millis excepts me I will let you know I live in Cleveland,Ohio though.I am considering Swift and about 7 others don't think I'll do anything till I have my written CDL then more options open up like U.S.Express,Schneider,Werner,Millis. I have to go the company route bad credit and 25,000 in student loans for an IT job I cannot find entry level since 2007.I am also looking at USA Truck and a few possibles.
