Does USX have APU's in all of their trucks?
Do they have an Inverter or do you can you supply one?
What do they have for Idling rules??
Thank you

No Apu's yet . They are "looking" at the battery powered type but not holding my breath
They will allow up to 1750 on inverters but the terminal has to install it but it's free you just buy the inverter
Idling rules are tighter with no idling in the terminals

If you are stuck at a Terminal and it is 90+ degrees outside, you can't Idle???
-
if it's above (don't quote me) like 75 you can idle or below 50
-
They are discouraging the idling of trucks when the weather is nice......it's like Flood said, above 75 or below 50
Shardrk Thanks this. -
Sounds like it might be do-able. I could see lowering the 75 to about 70, and even lowering the 50 to 40 too.

All of the newer trucks have bunk heaters so you do not need to idle for cold weather, just for hot
Shardrk Thanks this. -
So what is the reason a company of this size does not have APU's and built in inverters? I mean the APU's save all kinds of money for idling, and the built in inverters are just commonplace now, or so I thought.

invertors are optional so usx doesn't order them but if you want one they will intstall yours up to a 1750w for free. as to the apu's usx has checked and thay realy don't save as much as you thing they do.... what the apu makers say they use in fuel is not real world numbers, some clam .1 gl per hr...! a bunk heater uses that much some say .25 gl per hr. NO-LOAD almost all use .4-.6 gl per hr with the ac running and some the ac will not cool the cab AND sleeper (you need to close the curtain to keep the sleeper cool) and they add around 400 lb to the truck.
my volvo uses .5-.6 gl per hr to idle with the ac running so for my truck i would save MAYBE 2 gl a day and i idle for around 150 days so i may save 300 gl a year at $3.50 a gl i would save around $1050 and the apu will cost $8,000-$10,000 installed so it would take what about 7 years for it to realy pay for itself and the electric apu's are just as bad they weigh as much and the batteries only last about 2 years so you are spending $200 a year on batteries and on a good day they only last 10hr's. if your on a 34 you will need ti idle the truck for 16-18 hr's to charge the batt.
did we mention maintenance on the apu...?
don't you think a company the size of usx wouldn't do anything they could to save money... they put $800 camara systems on all the trucks to save >.1 mpg in fuel, they put in bunk haters that use .1 gl per hr to keep the truck warm.... the return on an apu is to slow, and i was part of the apu test a few years ago -
Sorry if I have to disagree, but you mean to tell me, a little maybe 2litre motor, uses almost the same fuel as a 15 litre motor idling???
