You only get a bonus for not useing Idle time 3 months of the year. I'm always at around 2% lately and I haven't got jack. The reason people still talk about this Scooter is the the massive turnover rate here, your a trainer you would know. With the terminals that are doing orientation each week, what's that? About 30 or so new hires a week, about 100+ a month (I see 7-10 new students each time I'm in Brooks) May's buying new trucks, but not that many. Somebody must be quitting. I'm closing in on year, and half the drivers I meet here got way less time than me. Only a tiny minoritiy of May drivers have read or even know what the trucking forum is. Orientation told us the bare minumum, then out with a trainer. My 1st trainer had never trained, crapped his pants twice and that's running off the 5, liked to get drunk at night when he could and then wake me up stumbling around the cab. Yeah I know, I shoulda reported him to Cindy, she didn't want to hear it, cut me off if I even started to anything she called "being negative". Anyway after saying , get me a new trainer or I'm gone , I got Kid Rock as a trainer. He was great but only had him for 2 weeks, and 4 day's of that he had home time. Could only learn so much in that time. Soled out, they tossed me the keys and said "get after it". Almost a year later, here I be , no accidents, no tickets or violations. But the only way People find things out is by asking questions.

Jimmy, all one has to do is type in "idle May Trucking" in the search box. The info is tagged and backlogged. My sense is that some new guys searching for info are to anxious and some even too lazy to do the research.
Every time the subject comes up, the usual handwringers show up to talk about how horrible May Trucking is for having an idling policy and how great their company is because they don't.
To which I say, whatever

isn't cost effective?
How is that? lets waste 8 gallons an hour of fuel to idle all night. Vs 1 gallon or so to run apu all night 8-10 hrs. Hmm.
Plus many companys will take the apu off the trade in truck, tear it apart go thru it, before putting it on a new truck.
No i guess companies just like wasting money in buying more fuel than they really need to.
Then they will slow down the trucks, tell ther driver no no you can no idle, not evven when the temp is under 35 or over 105. Why any one would work for a company like that is beyond me. -
8 gallons a hour???.
Your way off on that. -
um.... how are they waisting 8 gallons an hour of fuel to idle all night???
1. what ###### is idling all night? too cold? bunk heaters don't need idle
2. 8 gallons an hour? you might want to get that engine checked...
some of us don't really require the power needed to supply a small city, I know I'm still a 'newbie' but I've had no problem running my bunk heater all night when I needed to WITHOUT having to idle my truck for more than 45 minutes before I went to bed. I guess I'm just getting lost as to why people continuously say they have to idle all night if they don't have an apu.
http://fleetowner.com/green/auxiliary_power_unit_idling_study_1113/
"According to a study conducted by the NC Solar Center at North Carolina State University (NCSA), using auxiliary power units (APU) to reduce idling is not cost effective for trucks that idle less than four hours a day. However, when fuel prices are high, the study recommends APUs for trucks that daily idle more than seven hours.
The three-year project drew its conclusions from 20 trucks that operated for over 2.8-million miles in 42 states during the 16-month data collection period. The study's authors concluded that, using the demonstration field test as a specific sample, APUs require at least a five-year payback period when fuel costs are $4.50/gal or less. The authors noted that as base engine emission standards become more stringent, the emissions benefit of APUs will drop, although fuel use and CO2 reduction benefits will remain unchanged."Last edited: Mar 20, 2012

The problem is Scoot, I'm not that good on a computer, and honestly after driving all day I only got so much energy to spend on the internet. I like May, but I don't look on it as a family, I like most of the drivers I've met and I go out of the way to help newer drivers with the little I know. But I don't get offended by somebody not going along with the company line, just a job to me. I do commend you for being a trainer, 10cts a mile for shareing a cab with a new person every 3 weeks , 24-7, I couldn't do it. But I'm lucky that my wife makes good money, I'm doing this for my big house and my retirement. I like being home and miss my wife, and miss my Shovelhead, but gotta pay your dues to get a good local job. The only way a company will ever give more benifits to a worker is if enough workers start asking for it, the bosses View is if you don't like it quit, or, thats the way it is. Gotta be a reason Werner and Gordon gave there drivers APUs. Bluecell, I was an airdale boats 1971-1974, USS Constellation, CVA 64, 3 westpacs and became a shellback in 73.
