Yeah, I thought intermodal would be fun once a week.

We are always hiring Cable techs, train you and everything. We will even give you 1 day off a week.

See if the recruiter for JB can find you a dedicated fleet like Home Depot near you. They get home every day and are usually off on weekends.

JB may have requirements, and here's why i say that.

i worked with a guy at a former employer. he then went to the JB Hunt contract job for Staples. I called him abotu getting on. He was a dispatcher there as i had aksed him. from what he had told me, JB does not hire for dedicated accounts, until you do the usual driving for JB, like regional, or container or OTR.

maybe that has changed, can't say.

Maybe that has changed, when I left OTR back in 99 they hired me at the Home Depot Dedicated. Of course that only lasted a year and a half, all I could put up with JB.

i keep getting pre-approved emails from them, of course i put them in my spam folder. at the very least, JB was a place to start with, fresh out of school. but then again, they do have thier long time employee drivers.

    Rick Brown Thanks this.

But doesn't the money improve after the first year or two? I have a brother-in-law who used to be regional for Papa John's Pizza and is now OTR and he makes GREAT money. I guess that is because he has a LOT of experience, no accidents, and never cares about home time since my sister rides with him (she has no CDL, she's just a passenger).

My niece used to drive OTR and she told me not to expect much money the first two years but after that, it will improve.

Yer right and it is good to put all these pros and cons out there to help others make informed choices. I miss having a daily home. Yet I am pretty stoked to have a very easy and pleasant job that will pay me $65K this year.
Some day, I will settle down to a local gig but, ye gods, I hate the thought of some Chicagoland rat race daily grind - that would really kill the joy. I thought logging might be cool - nice scenery and local but it seems those gigs are long hours and low pay.
Maybe I shouldn't be a wuss and just go for the oil field or at least the Alaska run - that's OTR with better pay and 90% more purple-mountains-majesty.

How 'bout you? Are you resigned to the local gig or do you still think about further, more majestic (or lucrative) horizons?

No many companies do that. I know Roehl is one. How long have you been doing that and how good a lifestyle has it been for you?

You don't have to convince me these are good jobs but what I wonder is how hard do you have to work? I mean, if the hours are so long that "home daily" just means you make dinner and go to bed, then that does not appeal much to me.
I would take a local job if it was 5 days/week, 40 hours (or a bit more, maybe) and $1000/week minimum ...am I dreaming? Could you do that but choose (or have the choice) to work more?
