I'm sure you realize the difference between "shortage of drivers" and "shortage of freight". If any given truck company has empty trucks sitting in their yard, then they can say they have a "shortage of drivers". But, if they have no freight to haul, there would be no benefit to filling those empty seats, right ? So who decides if there is a shortage of drivers ? Is it a govt agency that calls around and asks the truck companies how many empty trucks are currently parked ? And then decides that these empty trucks means there's a shortage of drivers ?

I think a better barometer would be is the shippers demands being met ? Are the shippers freaking out because there are no trucks to haul their products ? Since there is tons of cheap rates out there and drivers willing to haul them, doesn't seem like a shortage to me.

Ed, the Bloomberg article was the only credible one of the bunch. You posted the exact same article twice...or maybe you thought I wouldn't notice it. You use the ATA as a reference....they're the gang that are at the crux of the whole problem/matter.

Ed, I did admit that there were some sporatic shortages in the "specialized" segment. I guess I should have been more specific, I did mention reefer and should have also mentioned oilfield.

Ed, in all those article you posted not once did anyone say "CRAP, our widgets aren't moving because there's a shortage of truck drivers" but rather it was journalists quoting fleet owners who don't want their costs to rise.

Ed, the MT fleet trucks sitting are a result of driver churn not a shortage of drivers. If fleets would solve (I use would because they know how to do this) then their mt trucks would be filled. The reason that the fleets don't do exit interviews is because they know the answers already. They know their recruiters lie like a city sidewalk, they know their dispatchers lie like a rug in the front hall and the owners know that their drivers aren't earning enough for what they do. Solve those problems and their revolving door will quit spinning.
