Lots of trucks on I-81 which is not close to Asheville which is on I-40.

81 is a mainline.
Asheville requires you to cross over on 40 into NC from Knoxville where 81 ends.
A word of caution, there is a older road and a set of tunnels that are pernamently closed. Do not try to use that road. Don't do it. Stay on the 40 and you will be in Asheville soon enough. It's a charming little town with a few things worth doing.
You do need a little patience to get through that part of the smokies on 40. It's a treat and priveldge to be in that area but sections of it are speed limited and the mountains you will be next to require it.
81 is like behind 95 the second most valuable road on the whole east coast. I spent so much time on that one I might venture that sections of it I know better than I know my home lands which is not far from there.
Enjoy the ride. Take a visit into Whites at the 205 or so on your way down. They know how to make the sammichs. There is another on the west side near roanoke that has been in continous operation since the 40's and 50's Just make sure your ground beef is cooked well. -
Yes, the speed is important... Trucks are 50 I believe... Cars are 55... I see lots of trucks doing 60+ and have seen a few taking naps along the side of the curve.... Trucks are restricted to right lane also...

Thank you, I was remembering that. You will be ok through there when you have time to do it. They speed through there all the time and it's not good for everyone. It's not that long or too far in terms of time lost at 50.

Why not just run 26 to Johnson city. There is no need to go to Newport.
