So, I know this is an old thread but here goes...is it realistic to think a newbie can make $40,000 dollars in their first year?

Yes. I made 38k gross first yr

Possible, yes .likely no. You will need to get 11,000 miles plus per month to make 40000 before taxes
Good luck with that at MayRetired Thanks this. -
Hello everyone.
I am thinking of driving for May as a company driver and have the following questions.
1) Do they use electronic logs?
2) What is their idle time policy?
3) Are the tractors equipped with APUs?
Thanks very much. -
1. Yes.
2. 10% off-season 45% summer.
3. No.TheOpenRoad Thanks this. -
Another question (sorry if it's been covered before but I couldn't find the answer in the older posts).
What is May's policy on bobtailing as long as your trailer is at a safe/approved spot. For example, when I drove for Crete, I was able to drop the trailer at a Stockton yard and bobtail to Manteca to kill time when there was no freight.
Does May have similar policies?
Thanks very much. -
Eh I don't think so. Guess it all depends on your dm. We also don't have line 5 as a company driver

On the idling issue, remember, if you go over your percentages, you will be charged idle time for the fuel you used. There are ways to help avoid this, but you will only hear how from fellow drivers. The office will never tell you about "idle credit".
Going to May as an experienced driver, in my opinion, is not recommended. Everything is watched extremely close and you are micromanaged to death. What route to take, where to fuel and how much to put in, not being allowed to edit some simple things on our log and being charged for over idle. There are arguments for both sides on those issues, and I can see where the company is coming from with their policies. I just feel like they don't put much into keeping experienced guys around. I left with 3 years, all with May, and never even got a phone call to try and keep me or see if I would like to come back. Also, don't get me started with the insurance.
My view is simple. May is a great company to get started with. They have good trainers, for the most part. You will learn the basics and not have to worry with routing, fuel etc. but, for an experienced driver, I feel there are much better outfits out there that will take much better care of you.Rogerthat and TheOpenRoad Thank this. -
