Thanks empton!. Do you get vouchers for paying lumpers & trailer washouts? can you do some unloads yourself? Just trying to get a handle on what type of "Bankroll" I'll need to keet with me when I'm solo.

We have accounts at many truck washes. If you use one that is not in the network you can pay and get reimbursed, or get an advance and write a comcheck, which you'll then be reimbursed for minus a $1 fee. The last is also how you pay lumpers. I did a couple unloads while out with my instructor; it's up to you.
Personally I prefer to hand over a comcheck and take a nap.:biggrin_25518:

I hardly ever carry much cash. Use the debit card for just about everything with paycheck direct deposited. Do need to remember to hit up the ATM before running the non-EZ Pass tolls however.

Unloads? 10 cents per case - although floral is different. It's not that they're "trying to stick it to the driver," as I understand it, the company got tired of paying Workman's Comp claims. It's cheaper in the long run for them to pay the lumpers, and let them mess themselves up.

IP, I assume that's policy for Company drivers? I know we got more than .10 a case unloading with my L/O instructor. At one place we split $280 for unloading 14 pallets of butter and breaking down to 22. Then drove around the other side of the building and split $80 for rolling one pallet of meat onto the dock. I was under the assumption the shipper and not Prime pays the unload fee. That sure seems to be the case at my "lumper pre-paid" Gen. Mills deliveries.

    DirtySideDown Thanks this.

That is the case... however, if the company decides they will only reimburse you at 10 cents per case... I'd rather get some sleep. Keep in mind that being your own lumper carries a pretty good physical risk. I think I'd rather let them do it than end up a non-driver doing lumping as a profession!

What do you consider a good rate for lumping your own load? Is there a cutoff you sort of look at?

    BTW, thanks for the posts.

Actually, yeah... 1 or 2 pallets with a tight delivery at the next receiver. Otherwise... they pay for it, so why should I bother?

im sure this question has been asked b4 but i admittingly am too lazy to go looking for it lol:biggrin_25522: i was thinking in the future (about a year or so id like to go independant but i dont really want any part of their lease program, instead id rather get me a truck and lease it to them.....i kno they do prefer you to take their lease, obviously because they make more money, but were all out here to make money its just im not trying to start out independant on an uphill battle like that anyways if theres a driver who has theirown truck leased to prime id like to kno
    thanks!

You can. I'm not 100% sure on the requirements for it though. I *think* it has to be under 18,500#'s, and there is a wheelbase requirement.
