I currently have gravel trains and dump trucks that I haul sand and gravel with (Flint, MI). I am considering jumping into asphalt hauling to stay busy does anyone have any advice for me?

I am just trying to figure out the little things about hauling asphalt. Like for example what do you guys spray your boxes with these days? Are guys still using diesel fuel? Do you run quick silver asphalt liners in your boxes or regular aggregate liners or no liners? What dimensions do I need to build my asphalt shoots (distance away from the truck) Are you running special ashphalt tarps or just the standard screen tarps?
-
We spray diesel if its for local and small jobs , if its a state job its a no no and they wont let us use it anymore. We use this soap stuff...its like chicken fat and grease mixed with water. Not as good but better than nothing. We dont run liners in our trucks. We got the thick , plastic tarps though , no screen tarps cause it lets the heat out to quick.

When I pm'ed you I thought you meant hauling liquid asphalt , not hot mix. Haha sorry for the confusion

Haha....I should have said HMA....I appreciate the help. I'm in Michigan and we can pull gravel trains and doubles so I'm thinking about putting Quicksilver asphalt liners in my trucks and trailers, removable folding asphalt shoots, vibrators for the boxes and trying to set up release spraying tanks on the trucks and trailers. I'm thinking I also will need to put the thick solid poly tarps on them in place of the mesh ones currently installed. If I'm missing anything or need to do anything differently I'm all ears? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yall have a way better set up than us with the vibrators if you put em on. We to run the solid poly tarps , the mesh ones just let to much heat out and they get mad over it. If a state inspector sees we have a truck with mesh tarps , that truck gets booted from hauling anymore mix to the job. Our asphalt shoots are welded on and stay there all the time...but my company pretty much does nothing but hotmix work and dirt work , so its not an issue. I suggest if you can to use diesel no matter what to spray down with....that soap we use , it works , but its not the same as the diesel. If you get a driver who sprays way to much , it'll sit under the mix and mix with the liquid asphalt and oil in it , and it builds up a nasty goo that sets like mix.

Do you know the name of the release agent you are using?
-
When I get to my plant tomorrow I'll stop by and write it down for you and post here with it. If I see it I'll recognize it , I'll google some products as well. Our shoots on our tandems our about....6 inches off the back of the bed. We do alot of hotmix though with belly dumps
-
Ok thanks for all the input. I know its all simple stuff but it helps me a lot. We dont use any belly dumps here. How do you guys use them? Do you dump out and then pick it back up with a skidsteer and put it in the paver?
-
Nope , a couple of little contractors we deliver to use a skidsteer to pick it up and put in the lay down machine , but we dont. We dump a load in front of a pick up machine , it picks it up and then throws it into the laydown machines hopper. so its Truck > Pick up machine > Laydown machine. We use it for long stretches. The pick up machine and lay down machine run together and are synched so its just one constant stretch. Helps prevents humps and stuff from having to stop and load the laydown machine , you get a better ride and test results.
