Ok some years back the only place I knew of that had a big bonus on was Kennesaw Transportation. It was 10k for 5 years of work. I'm not sure if they still offer that but that was big bucks back then. Fast forward to now and the bonuses or really up. I don't think anyone offers anything under 3k for a sign on bonus now.

But now I was checking my emails. And this had to be the largest one I've ever seen. Witch I wouldn't trust it by any means. A lot of these companies use the bonuses to reel drivers in. But then when the driver gets there he or she is fired before the bulk of the bonus is paid out. IMG_20180731_163646.png

I know teaming seems to be the only drivers most companies are looking for. But that's the largest bonus I've ever seen for truck driving.

Technically, anything that's promised to you by a carrier that's not paid to you the moment that you walk in the door is NOT a sign-on bonus. It's driver retention pay.

Maines in Conklin, NY is advertising a $12000 retention bonus, where they formerly were advertising a sign-on bonus. Someone must have called them on it and they were forced to advertise it correctly or face legal action.

In any event, any company that needs to attract drivers with big numbers like that is probably not a company that you're going to be happy working for. There's a reason that they can't keep drivers.

Needing drivers doesn’t necessarily always mean they have a serious driver turnover problem. Especially in these current economic times. Carriers are no different than anybody else. A business must take maximum advantage of boom times when and where they exist, by any means possible, and bank as much money as possible, before the next bust cycle begins to roll back around.

And if the bust comes next year. No problem. They won’t have paid out the entire advertised amount, anyway because of the way they structure the payouts.

But I agree. They should call it what it is unless they cut you the full bonus check right after orientation.

A "sign on bonus" screams to me....

"We might pay you this imaginary sum if you can put up with the crap we are going to put you through for less regular pay than other companies".

sign on or retention bonuses to me are BOGUS......

i need not (nor ever did) applied to ANY JOB that offered one. to me, it speaks of those companies inept ability, to pay a fair/decent wage, benefits, and maintain equipment in good repair.

no company, offering those basic things, needs to have any bogus, bonus plan.....pure, plain and simple....

Wow. One could make the argument that some of you have zero pride in your tradecraft, assign little to no value to yourself and what you can offer to a carrier. I guess it must be true. By some’s own admissions, we drivers as a whole are worthless and can’t be valued by others.

I’ll now go slink off in the corner as I try and process this.

if one has to be "valued" by a "bribe", then one is indeed useless and already had no pride..

those of us that HAVE pride, know that the salaries and benefits we get are good to great compensations. we need NOT be "bribed" to stay

Okay man. I didn’t realize it was an “either/or” situation” in every case. So your point is if a company seems to be a good fit, offers a good, competitive wage, but also offers additional hiring incentives then you should walk away. Even though you’re unhappy in your present job. I’m sorry dude. I’m just not wired to think that way but more power to you.

I’m sure you’ll turn in your notice to quit if/when your present job starts offering hiring bonuses.

I've never been a beleaver in bonuses. Just pay me a decent wage. Now these so called safety bonuses that some companies offer. It's the equivalent to hanging a carrot in front of a donkey. Because if you don't run at least a set number of miles. Or get whatever mpg they have it set at. Or if you are late, and all other kinds of parameters that are set up for it. One will not get the bonus.

And I'm not a bonus lover for the fact that bonuses are taxed at a higher rate than regular income. So what ever is advertised you won't get that full amount.

    Coover Thanks this.
