Over the past couple of years we have figured out what works and doesn't work. We see the things that contribute to success and red flags of failure for O/O's.
And ATTITUDE is atthe top of the list.
For both success and failure.
Take a look under the O/O section on many of threads. When you boil it down they are questions about what is going to make you successful. What is the best truck. Brokers cheat me. Is this company any good. What are the best areas to run. So I thought I would post some thoughts and start a discussion on TTR on the biggest factor in success and failure. -- ATTITUDE --
A positive attitude will overcome lake of knowledge and determine your success. (In fairness, I know that I butchered a Zig Ziglar saying and looked it up. "Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.")
So I know all the excuses why drivers have a bad attitude. But if you have 100 drivers that have experienced the same negative experiences why are their 2-3 that are still happy and positive? What is the thing that makes one driver that is ignored at a window lose his temper while another takes it stride?
And how many times have we seen the angry driver let that one negative experience affect his whole day causing a bad attitude?
So let's make this a little more real. As I am talking to O/O's that are looking to lease with us I am looking at their attitudes towards others. Because I understand that how they perceive and treat others is going to impact how others treat them - the attitude they receive back. With a positive attitude, they will get more opportunities, experience less frustrations and able to earn more for the same amount of work. This is not just a theory, I have several years of O/O earnings and can go down the list of my top earners and the attitude that they have (Rollin Coil is a great example).
And trust me, it is hard staying positive. I would love to hear some of your thoughts on how a good or bad attitude has helped or hurt you.

I'm a positive person and I agree with all of your message. I went thru a very difficult period in my life dealing with a heavy decision. During the difficult time I was pre-occupied, not really thinking like I normally would, and my attitude was not bad but it was indifferent. I think if I could go thru again knowing what I learned from that I would try harder to project what I felt which was positive, can-do thinking "I'm going to make every day the best it can be". I guess without that difficult time I might not have known that about myself. And people did notice, my long-time employer noticed and was concerned, a good company who gave support, they didn't just ignore it nor did they get too involved. Employers get what they give, it's a two way street. I hear all the time about dispatchers who mistreat drivers, all the time, and I'm grateful that could never happen in my company, would not be tolerated. A positive person can roll with it but it's still not a good situation when employers let bad things happen on a daily basis. I imagine some drivers are fearful of saying anything too. Anyway, it's a great topic and good to shine a light on it.

A great man once said..."The second greatest power on earth is the power to choose" ~ Gus S. Miller Jr.
You CHOOSE how you are going to react, and that effects how others are going to react. It's not always a simple or easy choice, but it is yours to make.
So you can choose the attitude you present to others, and yourself. Choosing a pleasant attitude 'usually' nets a pleasant attitude in return... Not always, but that was THEIR choice. Also choosing your OWN attitude is important too. It improves your outlook on life, and reduces some of the stress you might be having.
I never even imagined I would be doing what we are doing now (driving truck), but I will continue to choose to look at the better side of what we do... And the view from my office window is AWESOME!!g.o.a.l, truckon, BigBadBill and 2 others Thank this. -
Attitude determines just about everything in your life. You can see it on these boards on a daily basis. The guys with the piss poor attitudes are the guys that are struggling.

A good attitude :
is a attribute of GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE .
Your attitude and appearance defines who you are in the face of a customer . For instance if a customer is short handed on the dock and had 2 workers call in, are you the driver who - " Thows a Fit " or are you the driver who is calm and offers to help in the situation or at least understanding of the customers problem ? Both are examples of your attitude and the outcome can be different in each example as to if the customer wants you back at their dock in the future .
Another factor on attitude goes with out saying the stress we see on the road , you have to learn to keep it intact and not take it out on a customer or the general public . The public does not understand our challenges and the only thing they will remember is the TRUCKER who gave them the FINGER and the NAME on the DOOR . That changes their out look on that company automatically and who knows it could be the shipping or receiving manager at your next destination, and then they have a pre disposed opinion of you or your company because if the actions you displayed under stress .
you must always keep in mind a good attitude will get you farther than being hasty or hateful towards a customer . As a owner operator it is also your customer service and attitude that can also help you land a better rate ,
Company -A = 3.05
Company -B = 3.12
Company - B : has more curtious drivers and have a good clean appearance and great attitudes so they go with company B ( example )
you have to understand as a business owner the actions you take today may affect you later on down the road . That can be POSTIVE or NEGATIVE but depends on the attitude you have.g.o.a.l, BigBadBill, fr8te_sh8ker and 2 others Thank this. -

Is this an attempt at recruiting on here without sounding like your recruiting, because that's not cool. Also, you need to use your spacebar to make this easier to read.mje Thanks this.

.... and greatly impact the amplitude of your wallet.mje Thanks this. -
Attitude is just window dressing. Something that makes you appealing to others.
I think you're confusing attitude with problem solving. Most people complain about stuff and wait for someone else to deal with the problem, or they focus on blame. The perception, actually the outcome, is bad attitude.
A problem solver puts that energy into a solution. Instead of broadcasting their misery, they are seen as successful and positive. Having a good attitude even.
Look for problem solvers. -
Sorry sir, made some changes so that it doesn't sound like we are recruiting. And cut and pasted it our of One Note and didn't notice the spacing. Fixed that as well.
Sole intent of the post is seeing plenty of the negative attitudes in posts that I see as the single biggest factor in success and failure as an O/O.Lady K, truckon, Container Hauler and 3 others Thank this.
