I have just gotten into audio books in the last year. By far the best one I have listened to is:

The Power of One written by Bryce Courtney narrated by Humphery Bower.

Is anyone interested in trading some books? I have had the audible subscription for about a year. I usually burn a copy and convert the files to MP3 and could easily mail a DVD with a number of books on it. PM me if anyone is interested.

Will check my library...What's your general taste in audiobooks? and do you have any other suggestions? I listen to about 3 audiobooks a week and am always looking for ideas.

I generally like action, Sci fi etc. One of the better listens recently have been 2 books by Daniel Suarez. Freedom and Daemon. Waiting for more from him.

I am also enjoying Bryce Courtney at the moment. Been a Dean Koontz fan over the years but haven't listened to many of his books on audio. I am finding the narrator makes a huge difference.

    Grandiego Thanks this.

One source I have found to be excellent, although most, if not all, the authors are unknowns is http://www.podiobooks.com/ . Despite the authors being, for the most part, unpublished, the quality of the books is incredible. And, its free :biggrin_255:

I like a lot of the classics too. One of the problems with that though is that I 've already read quite a few of them, especially the Samuel Clemens/Mark Twain. Also, the classics used to be the main focus of audiobook production in the beginning so many recordings are old and poorly done. Basically you'd have some arrogant professor reading a classic in the most boring manner possible. Fortunately, many of those early recordings were in cassette, and are being replaced with newer versions in MP3 or some other modern format.

I use the library for both going and getting books on cds and for downloading. Through your public library you'll have access to a very large free downloadable library.

That's the main problem with audiobooks...even if the story is good, a bad narrator will destroy it. I've only listened to a couple of Dean Koontz that I could tolerate. Have you listened to RED MARS by Kim Stanley Robinson (narrator Richard Ferrone)? If you like Sci fi you'd probably enjoy it. I only like action in the context of good character developement. Most people are the opposite. Two of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to were performed by The Hollywood Theater of the Ear... THE MALTESE FALCON and SWEENEY TODD AND THE STRING OF PEARLS. Tried to listen to The Maltese Falcon once before but the narration was horrible and I gave up on it the first time. Sweeny Todd and the String of Pearls is also a movie (a musical) with Johnny Depp which I didn't particularly care for.
