I was wondering if any of you gentlemen with your operating authority earn a living close to home. Is it possible to be home every night or almost every night?

If it is possible to be home every night or almost every night, how would the money compare to traveling further? I am about a half hour west of Phila; this would be the area that I am curious about.

I am continually amazed at the knowledge and information shared on this site.

    Thanks in advance.

I run that area frequently. It's possible, but you're going to really limit your profitability if you haul spot market freight from the load boards. You'd do best if you can secure some direct accounts. Personally, I've been doing well by running short trips into NH, VT, MA, CT, NY, NYC, NJ, DE, MD and VA that pay very well ($2.80-$10/mile), and then finding something going back to my 'home' area (Pittston, PA). I can usually stay overnight at 'home' at least once during the week, and most weekends by doing this. I pull dry van and currently don't have any direct shippers that I work with on a regular basis. I don't own the truck, but I do schedule and book my own loads most of the time while the owner handles the billing.

Thanks windsmith. That seems like pretty good money for dry van. Is it difficult to regularly get those prices? Are you using loadboards or brokers?

Up and down the east coast where you are traveling, are there areas that are hard to get out with a decent paying load? Do you have any info on loads coming out of Philly? And how about loads going west, say the pittsburgh area?

I'm glad you and the owner have a good thing going. It's nice to see people working together, and it works out for everybody :)

Still 100% load boards at the moment.

Well, what I got coming out wasn't so great - $500 for 240 miles into NJ - another black hole. But that was expected, and it all averages out. $1800 for 2 days and 550 miles is still pretty good. And I still don't know what the detention rate is for the 3 hours this morning. We were lucky to get that decent of a rate coming out of Vermont.

Philly is hit or miss; if I can't find anything there, I'll run empty for a better rate out of the Baltimore area. Going out to Pittsburgh is also hit or miss, but I can usually find something going that way for $2/mile or better.
