I have been. Most people have similar problems; there doesn't seem to be one right answer, and if you get one idiot officer who refuses to admit he's wrong, you have very little recourse.

There's rules for every state and I'd keep a copy for each, but you're right if you get one that's dumber than a rock there's no sense no matter what you do. Best to get a good lawyer service and keep your record clean.

You could get a "registrant" USDOT #

(some people are sticking those on their cars without registering them and getting good results even though registrant USDOT numbers are originally intended for owner/operator "leased to a trucking company" where the trucking company would be the "motor carrier responsible for safety" see the 5 "starting USDOT registration web page 1-5" pdf-s here: link removed as per forum rules on new members - search for: county notary google group on google and go to the files section of the group)

and send in the IRP and fuel apps certifying non commercial for pleasure use or travel only status (that You are owner but not an "operator" or "driver") and requesting exemption (link removed as per forum rules on new members - search for: "What vehicles are exempt from IRP registration?" on google answer: "Recreational Vehicles (a vehicle used for personal pleasure or travel" - FLHSMV) so that You have paperwork to present when crossing state lines.

You might also consider titling it in the name of a (personal property - for asset protection purposes or other type) trust so that it is associated with a customer number instead of with Your driver's license number.

Hopefully you won't tell anyone You were "driving" it and shoot Yourself in the foot by doing so.

Read this brief to see what I mean: link removed as per forum rules on new members - search for: driver license vs right to travel brief on google
See, even a "private use" motor vehicle that just about everyone is "driving" is commercial because, while You have the right to travel in it the normal course of life and business (yes "and business" - "Social, domestic and pleasure use means you are covered for non-work related journeys as well as journeys to and from one place of work"), You also have the priviledge to "drive" it for profit, as a pizza delivery boy or charge to deliver someone's fridge from a store etc. You just have to change the type of insurance You have from pleasure to business.

I'm also working on getting my automobiles recognized as solely for pleasure use, travel.

I'd be very interested in the details of how they titled and registered (which tax class) it for You. Is Your insurance "pleasure/recreational use"?
