If you are a full service provider, with the exception of dispatch, these services retail anywhere between $695 to $1,200 upfront (for filing new authority) plus a per driver/per month fee. Audit support and other filing services range between $15-$500 or more per event. Typical basic consulting is priced around $150 per hour for phone consults and about half that for document reviews. Speaking from experience you need hundreds of clients, even as a one man show, to make a good living.

There are dozens, maybe hundreds of companies that already provide these services including OOSI (the business arm of OOIDA), Fleet Compliance Solutions, JJ Keller, Tivacloud, eComply and more. Many state trucking associations also have a business service arm that provides these services, so you will be competing on many different fronts.

To be effective doing this today you will need a software platform -perhaps even telematics to automate data collection and your clients will need to upload/digitize everything so you can easily review it. The old fashioned way, visiting in person, is too costly. These software platforms can be licensed from vendors, so it is possible.

Keep in mind companies like JJ Keller have entire departments devoted to protecting their copyrights (ask me how I know LoL), meaning you will need to create all your own forms and training materials or register as a re-seller to use their items like DQ folders. I caution against this simply because they have been very effective in convincing clients to switch from the client's provider of choice to Keller.

Now with all that said, what are your qualifications and certifications to provide these services? Are you a CDS or have other recognized industry certifications or just an owner operator wanting to help? How about errors and omissions insurance? Performance bond? And, last but not least, what would make an owner operator want to chose your service above all the other already established services?

I am not being rude with the above paragraph, just making sure you have thought this thru. You need to bring something special to the table, maybe a great local reputation or experience in a specialized segment of the trucking industry, for example I specialize in car haulers and tow trucks. Perhaps you have been very active with your state trucking association and the membership there can help promote you?

Excellent point! Any consultant or compliance management firm worth a darn will back up their work. It is a must to have errors and omissions insurance, perhaps even a performance bond, as well as reserve capital to make right with when you make a mistake.
