I am quite sure I can accomodate your horn needs on the electric end, Lurchgs. I have horns that can make one of them sound like, well, a freight train to say the least. I wouldn't be able to help much with the 4-8-0, that would be for one of the whistle guys.

I was recently evaluated by the local voc rehab services. They determined that my motor skills are perfectly suited for driving. There is no clumsiness there that they could see. Judgement, when driving-related, was also considered as excellent in the assessment.

The yard jockey position is what I would be thinking about for the inter-modal job. I also like the idea of being a 'casual' driver, where I would work a few days per month. I already have a Class-B CDL with air brake and passenger endorsements, and there shouldn't be a problem adding a hazmat. I just need something that's sufficient to keep the car repaired, the lights on, and food in the fridge. Of course, the thing with self esteem is quite valid. A job coach would be a necessity in my case, and again this has to do with the communication issues.

The medical, of all things, stands in the way of all this along with the employment interview. And this is very unfortunate.

I forgot to mention: My doc is a general practitioner. From my understanding, he is not certified to do the DOT physical exam, and this may explain some of his hesitancy.

Hi there. While I do not want to disclose information of me on here I would be glad to send you my e-mail so that I could talk to you.

I think you could truck drive if you could drive a school bus.

I should have re-read your initial post before replying because it's obvious from your driving history that distractibility is not a problem. And it's also clear that you have the ability to "read", or anticipate, other drivers' actions on the road. Those were actually my two biggest concerns.

I'm not downplaying the importance of effective face-to-face interaction, but if a part-time job exists in a yard or as a casual driver, I think -- with your driving skills being as they are -- your openness about Aspergers could make this a good match. The hard part will be convincing your prospective employer of that. Perhaps a vocational counselor could help... or even intercede on your behalf? (Just be sure he understands that you must protect your Social Security benefits.)

Go for it... and know that I'll be pulling for you every step of the way. You have no clue how much I'd like to see you succeed at this. :yes2557:

I will do my best, Ducks. This may not materialize for several months, if it does. Like I said, the doctor told me that my chances of making it through an interview would be very highly unlikely. I gave up on the menial work after that last interview for the cleaning job. The "so you were a bus driver" thing was so squarely lodged in the brain of that janitorial interviewer, I couldn't even pry it out with a screw driver. I was thinking: "Look d00d, how hard can it be to operate a friggin swing buffer?"

If there's one thing I can say NorfolkSouthern, your writing, grammar and punctuation is much better than 85% of the forum posts.

Wonder what happened to OP,he hasn't been posting here since 1998. I guess he gave up on driving as a job and is content to collect his SSD checks. He sure seemed intelligent, many folks w/ ausbergers are highly intelligent,I like to think something like Dustin Hoffman's character in Rainman.
