A friend of mine told me tonight that his good friend owns a car hauling co.He's looking for drivers, and my friend could put in a good word for me.They have fairly new Pete's and make decent money.I've had this job for 37 years and I'm in great shape for my age, look and feel about 10 years younger.I've driven low beds in the past, but on a daily basis, load and unload about 70,000 pounds of product a day by myself from a dry van .I've never been afraid of work and am almost anal about detail.
I'm getting ready to retire from my job with a pension. My question is,would you get into this line of work at 60,or will be a killer?

It might not be bad, but it's not going to be easy.

    Good luck.

You will find out how good a shape you are in very quickly when you start hauling cars. It is one thing to unload a van, but with cars you will be climbing up and down on the side of a truck to load or unload your cars. You will also be walking on a very small ledge while trying to find something on which to hold to prevent yourself from falling. It will also be necessary to bend down to chain your cars on the lower deck of your trailer. It will be physically challenging, at any age. You may want to see if you can observe some loading their cars. It will give you an idea of what is involved. It would be easier for someone younger, but if you have the desire and are in good shape you may want to give it a try. Sixty isn't so old.

Good work Billy Big Rig. Youre the best driver ever!!! Get over yourself..... Why dont you try and help someone...for once. You are the person the DOT is trying to eliminate from the transportation industry!!! :biggrin_25518:

Dont worry about the haters. This forum, especially, is FULL of haters, and OL' SCHOOL BIG RIGGERS... please. Billy Big Rigs time is over. You approach your new career with a positive attitude and a good work ethic and you will succeed. Look around at some of these..."truckers." You see some dandys out on the road. If they can do it you can do it..... Its time for Professional Drivers.....not TRUCKERS.....:biggrin_25525:

Maybe if he took more then 10 minutes to tarp that load, he wouldn't have gotta all the beef from us.
This guy your telling to ignore us haters is the prime example of people who should NOT be driving a truck. He preached about securing coils and steel enough so that it wouldn't come thru into the cab and hurt him, but yet he's putting his life in danger everyday with his job? SERIOUSLY? WTF!!!!!
You care more about yourself getting hurt then you do all the other motorist that your having to deal with everyday? Not shocking statements coming from a Western driver.

I don't mean to be one of these guys that rags on people, but honestly........hell...I'm still trying to figure out exactly how to express the thoughts in my head right now.

As far as car hauling goes.....HEH, good luck!! You think having a tarp fly off and then its done n over with was hard? Wait till you "nick" and I do mean something less then a rock chip that brand new 60k truck/car and see what happens. Other then the physical part or being in the elements, car hauling is nothign alike....... nor would I reccommend that side of trucking so anyone with comments like his.

If you want better money, get the proper experience and skills in general and then move on to the more specialized side of trucking! And here I thought I was bad for climbing my ###### of 350lbs up my ladder to properly secure my 8ft load. I get #### talked to me all the time because I'm a VERY big dood and I don't mind working for a living! Also, the OP said that he's used to busting his ### on ice/snow in Detroit. Well my friend, that 1ft fall was nothing compaired to the 13ft your going to take from a car carrier, so....maybe you got some bunions built up on that ### of yours to cusion the fall!!!!!

No offense, but if you have no experience, your either not going to find anyone to take you, or they'll be such a crappy company and pay so poorly, you'll quit.

FYI, Auto transport insurance is one of the highest in the transport industry, companies can't take a risk with inexperienced or poor drivers.

FYI 2, Just to give you an idea of what I deal with, I run a 2 car enclosed, right now I have a 2011 Lamborghini Gallardo convertible, A 2011 Audi R-8 Convertible, and the motorcycle from the movie TRON Legacy, on my truck, I have over $450,000 worth of vehicles on here and am responsible for each one. If I put a scratch in one of those cars, it could cost up to $2500 to fix it. Damage a wheel, $1000-1500....
