Auto's can't climb, and you really won't be in control of the vehicle. You'll lose yourself going downhill, won't be able to rev up high enough to hold it with the jakes...

Really? In five years pulling OW/OD loads I have never run into any of these problems.

the i-shift is a volvo trans and volvo will only
put it behind a volvo engine.... ultrashift is a eaton trans and can be in any truck.... -
my old 09 prostar with cummins 450 with eaton ultrashift ran the hills out west just fine and the trans in manual will hold in any gear will above 2,000 rpm's...

Unless there has been some massive improvement in efficiency, I just don't see it. I like having control. Every car or other vehicle I've purchased or driven mostly manuals...

These aren't your automatic from the car world, they are automated manual transmissions, even the 2 pedal ones without a clutch pedal have a clutch.
There is no slippage underway.
I don't care for the Eaton-Fuller Ultra-shift offerings, but most of the others have been better received. Like any mechanical device, these can malfunction and break down, too. -
Actually, I have the Volvo engine with ultra.... I have always driven manual, maybe I simply got lucky and got a decent vehicle. I am considering requesting a different truck, not because of the auto, but because it is a half sleeper and to small for me and my stuff.

Born to be stupid. Been running my Volvo with a D16 18 speed auto in the mountains for a year now havent had any problems you can shift them manually you know. OOOOOOOOPPPS obviously you didnt know or you wouldnt have come up with such a reply. Only an idiot would run through mountains using his jake brake to control the vehical speed, thats what the truck gods gave you brakes and common sence for. Just did the Fargo thin on sheets of ice made it to Fargo and home with no chains they closed the highway right after. Many trucks did not make it however many were in the ditch jackknifed or sitting in restg areas or parked on ramps. I would say those with experience made it to Fargo those who dont did not.
