I've driven the older Ultrashift as well as the Volvo I-shift. That I-shift was VERY smooth and slick. Most of the time you never even knew when it was shifting. Great on hills and city traffic. The Ultrashift was noisy as all get out and always seemed to hunt for gears on hills. From what I understand though most of the hunting problem was due to the programming.

I still prefer a manual non-syncro box though. Mind you I learned how to float the trans properly from early on. Most new drivers can't drive a manual properly to save their lives.

possibly the worst thing about the Volvo i- shift for US is small overwall ratio

I've wonder what the weight difference on the auto vs manual. We have a 2004 9200i with and auto, all aluminum and a 1999 8100 all steel and the 9200i is only 400 lbs lighter with all the aluminum. I looked under the truck and the Arvin Meritor auto 12 speed is huge.

The Arvin Meritor is really a ZF auto shift. If it goes bad out of warranty it's cheaper to replace it with a new 18sp.
