You guys make me laugh, trying to link bad driving, and bad drivers,to an automatic transmission.
I spend alot of time in my truck, the bulk of it on open highway, where no shifting is involved.
I enjoy the auto in the city and heavy traffic, where I can spend more time, watching for the other bad drivers...driving an auto..LOL

Well, today, autos are the norm for the major mega carriers who hire "greenhorn" drivers. So it stands to reason some might make the correlation. I won't, however, I too have heard the idea that new drivers tend to corner faster in autos then in manuals during their training/learning phase. And I too can see that that may in fact be a reality. Not sure of the dynamics behind it, just that is seems to happen that way for some.

Is the pay for drivers lower now than in past? I realize mega companies are cheaper and I'm not saying auto trans is bad but it also makes it easier for meag carries to find and recruit cheaper labor that would otherwise not qualify.

I think in some circles, carriers have in fact lowered pay rates as they built in "training costs" of "1" and reduced pay rates "2", and they seem to have gotten away with it. Also, many have used the line" we get you home almost weekly, isn't that worth a pay cut?" And to be fair, if a truck is sitting 4 out of 14 days instead of 2 out of 14 days, that's costing somebody, something. I realize in some cases, drivers can have their cake and eat it too, but that is the exception rather then the rule when you look at the larger scope of the modern era of the OTJ trucking world.

In some cases I love the auto and in other cases I miss the manual also. Both have upsides and downsides.
