If OnGuard goes out you can still use cruise. Turn cruise control on and off three times and then it will work like normal.
Downgrades take some getting used to, but if you set your cruise it will maintain your speed within 5 miles +-, including turning on the engine brake to slow you down on downgrades. It will also automatically downshift when you are going uphill and you don't have to disable the cruise control at all.

That on/off solution hasn't worked on any of the 3 trucks I've had

Try hitting the service brake rather hard and then trying the three on/off trick...
This worked on all four trucks I've driven here at Schneider, including the company one...

I do 5 or 6 times. works for me. in both trucks I have had since I learned it.

Tried it today, stupid on guard, worked fine for me. Kind of funny it breaks down when there is nothing around

I usually just keep doing. On off a couple of times then try if it doesnt engage try try again
