I realize trucking companies probably need equipment that will allow them to get drivers in the seat and rolling as quickly as possible, but for my particular needs,I pretty much stuck to something built to last awhile ,and relatively easy to maintain and repair. Remember the old twelve and fourteen speed Spicers? I still have a couple of those around.

We will lower you backwards into a 18% grade, 9 yards on for a swimming pool. My Old MACK will do it. 20' 1 1/2 hours, 500 cash. I'm a Truck Driver. Still got my bonus for on time delivery. :)

In my opinion, and I have seen the same general response; I don't think automatic transmissions will replace the manual transmissions. I only see a few benefits to auto transmissions; which is mainly for local purpose trucks. I used to drive garbage trucks, both automatics and manual transmissions. The only liked the automatics when I did house to house pick up. I feel the automatic transmission are best in that scenario. Overall, I always preferred the manual transmissions any other time (which I drove for the house to house stop a lot too). If I had a choice, was in the field as a professional truck driver, I would pick a manual transmission over automatic any day. Just like many have said; you have more control over the truck.

I drove an auto last night & I think its a piece of crap....So slow on takeoff you have to wait a lot longer for traffic to clear or youll cut somebody off & you have to go thru all the gears...Kept grabbing for the shifter & the clutch & there wasnt any....Manuals are much stronger than autos & run much cooler....Thumbs down on autos...

i've operated 4 x4's,4x3's 10's 13's most of my life and they will probally be around forever. i been on a volvo with an i-shift 12 speed for 2 years and i love it, my knees dont hurt any more and this tranny does whatever i ask it to do. i deliver in a metro area and i could not see driving a manual any more. as with any piece of equipment a person will expieriance disatisfaction untill one discovers the do's and don'ts and fully understands how to operate it. if i long hauled i think i would prefer a 13 speed over an auto but the new auto with the eco-roll is pretty amazing

Wow....there musta been something wrong with it. I've driven both the Eaton AutoShift and UltraShift and I found them to be extremely inferior to the Volvo IShift. The IShift will start in a higher gear when you're bobtailing and skip two or three gears. It also seems to anticipate when you might want maximum startability by starting in first gear the first time you release the brakes when pulling a trailer, or when you want to slide axles. It also starts in a lower gear when sitting on an upgrade, and it is much more adept at Hollywood stops than the Eaton junkers. It will also creep along in gear at an idle without slipping the clutch, which is nice for backing up. AND.....unlike the Eatons, it will NOT dump the clutch in second gear at 15 MPH if you start to roll down a hill from a complete stop and don't touch the throttle immediately. (Speaking from experience)

They will not completely supplant manual transmissions any time soon, especially for vocational/rough service work like oil and gas fields, as they don't deal with mud very well and are sensitive to air pressure.

You obviously had no idea what you were doing and should not have even been in that truck. Everything you posted is rubbish unless the truck was totally screwed up and should have been out of service. You can skip shift at will.. 2000 rpm shifts??? LOL
