OK gotta ask, I know that at 105,000 fuel mileage isn't your biggest concern, but are the full convertor automatic allusion hard on fuel? Also, how is your driver that went of the bridge?

I think they are getting about the same mileage as the autoshift 10 speeds, I don't really pay much attention to fuel mileage being as I'm not paying for it lol.
Ya know they have less gears but they don't lose any road speed shifting, power is steady and constant.
I haven't heard anything on the landfill driver yet, I was wondering that myself after seeing a post here about a similar accident back East.
I'll try to remember to ask some other drivers or my dispatch tomorrow to see if anyone's heard anything.

I am giving a serious look at the new Allison TC10 10 speed full automatic that was debuted this spring. This looks like the killer thing from what I have come across so far. It is designed for OTR market and to take on the auto shift/ultra shift competition. Have only seen a few preliminary numbers, but it seems like the Allison offering is set to give these others a run for their money. It has shown a slight mpg edge over them, and also can take some rather serious abuse that would have the dash lights going off with an ultrashift. Well see how it plays out. I have the luxury of time to see some longer term data. Some pretty good videos on it at Allison's site and you tube.

Although I agree with your assessment of the TC-10 being the best of both worlds,,, I was a little disappointed yesterday when I speced a new KW T680 and was told that KW is not offering that tranny in any of their models.

I though this strange as "pete salesman" on here test drove a new Pete with one?

Having driven the 6 speeds with heavy loads on I can well imagine a 10 speed would be the cats meow.
I'll bet they probably hold up pretty well too, I've heard of some failures with the 6 but they are covered with a one million mile warranty from what I've heard.

Well, compared to all the other stuff, when one thinks of automatics, Allison rises to the top. They have been at the automatic game longer than anyone else, and they didn't have to rely on computers to shift their trannies all those years. They virtually wrote the book on autos. All of this computer shifting a transmission does work, but it is hard to beat the original way. I drove a few trucks in Alaska in the 80's that had Allisons in them. Darn sweet. They did great no matter what we put them thru. And did it well even down to -70F actual temps.

Unlike some who have an infatuation with shifting like it is some sort of right of passage to manhood, I am just fine with Autos. Though to that end, the Allison hands down over the other stuff. I have done enough shifting for two lifetimes. I have an 18 in my present truck, but if I ever get another, it will have an Allison in it. From what you, Kansas Transit, said in your post, seems like getting one is going to require a niche type of truck like a Mack. Oh well, the MP8 is not a bad engine and the Macks are built well. Just might have to go Bull Dog to get what I want in the future. We'll see.

To be Honest CP, I like the Macks, my only ##### is that when you get into sleepers they have VERY little for storage, other than that, I would buy a Mack, esp. now that you can get M Drive in one (basically a renamed Volvo I-Shift)

IMHO the fluid drive Allisons are garbage compared to the electronically shifted "standard" transmissions
