The dumb thing I have noticed in freightliners is when you go to climb a hill, the rpms will drop down to 1000 to 1100 and it still won't downshift, so you go to manually bump it down and the dumb thing just beeps at you and doesn't down shift!!! u have to dang near lug the engine for it to downshift on its own!!!

Oh, and on a 780 Volvo, it's a typewriter like thing mounted adjacent to the right armrest. Really sweet when you want to get in the sleeper area. NOT!!Last edited: Jun 23, 2010

Day before yesterday at the Love's in Horse Cave KY we had a trucker block the Northbound ramp cause his automatic locked up. There he sat at the top of the ramp while traffic backed up behind him and cussed. Thing wouldn't go ahead nor back up. Troopers showed up and hollered at him. "Experts" told him do this, do that. Nothing worked. Eventually a wrecker showed up and towed him off.
Not many automatic fans in that mess. -
im not sure what the rears are, I slip seat every load, im what you call an extra board driver, but when I can have a say in it, I would alot rather run one of the international's with a 10 in it. Although we are starting to run new pro-stars with auto's in them, an while im still not a fan of auto's these are ALOT nicer than the freightliner auto's. Heck the inside of them reminds me of a car, you got all ur controls on the wheel, even the air horn!!!

I hate any automatic trannys becuase automatics are for drivers that can't drive anything from a car to any truck I'm a little old school try to get some of the people out of trucking school and stick them with a truck with a 5x4 or twin sticks, you have to look at there faces, I my be 19 but its sticks all the way from a 3 speed to a 18 speed the trucks that are coming out now are just taking out the skill so anything can drive I have seen some drivers around and they must of got there CDL out of a cracker jacks box. I'm 19 and getting my CDL to drive for a local grain eleavtor hard work and I hear drivers complain on the wait to get loaded and unloaded is sitting for upto 3 hours for more extreme waits just take someone who clpains and stick them in a grain line some waits to get unloaded are upto nine hours but you get paid by the hour too.

None of the bigger outfits are using autos, are they? Swift or Werner? Not that I want to drive one. I actually want to make sure I'm not applying for companies that use 'em!

I will stick to a 10 speed ,maybe after 3 or 4 years i would like a auto.

My last driving job was a 08 386 Pete with a 10 speed auto.I almost turned it down but I needed the job.I was surprised how fast I got used to it on the highway it was cool cause I had 75mph top end and it pulled like a rented mule. You can pour the coffee while the truck drives it self.
I never got used to the lack of control when backing into docks and when slowing down it had me using my brakes more than I normally would. -
a driver told me and another guy in trucking school about that...the automatic volvo he had....he said he could be brushin his teeth & driven at the same time......
